Joaquín Sabina, is the second son of Adela Sabina del Campo and Jerónimo Martinez Gallego, which was a policeman. He attended a Carmelite primary school and he started writing his firsts poems and composing music at 14 years old. He was part of a band called Merry Youngs which imitated singers such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry or Little Richard.
In 1968 he enrolled in the University of Granada, but went into exile in London, using a fake passport, to avoid Francisco Franco's persecution. In London, he collaborated with other young artists in theater and cultural events.
In 1975, he started composing songs and singing at local bars. When the dictatorship ended in 1977 he returned to Spain and enrolled in the military.
In 1978 his first album, Inventario (Inventory), debuted with the number-one hit single Pongamos que hablo de Madrid (Let's say I'm talking about Madrid).
Afterwards, he released Malas compañías (The Wrong Crowd) and a live album called La mandrágora (The Mandragora), which caused much controversy due to the racy content of its lyrics. Spain was just coming out of the dictatorship, and Sabina's favorite topics have always been deemed "morally inappropriate" by some: the homeless, prostitutes, drunks, and Robin Hood-styled thieves. He is very much anti-stablishment.
In 1983 he released Ruleta Rusa (Russian Roulette) and two years later, Juez y parte (Judge and Jury). His political views led him to take part in the anti-NATO movement. He later published Joaquín Sabina y Viceversa.
In 1987 he released Hotel, dulce hotel (Hotel, Sweet Hotel), which sold a large number of records in Spain. That success followed with his next album El hombre del traje gris (The Man in The Gray Suit), and followed with a successful tour of South America.
In 1990 he released Mentiras piadosas (White Lies) and two years later Física y química (Physics and Chemistry), which led to another successful tour of the Americas.
His later albums Esta boca es mía (These Lips are Mine), Yo, mi, me contigo (I, Me, With You) and 19 días y 500 noches (19 Days and 500 Nights), won him recognition and multiple platinum albums.
After recovering from a stroke, he returned to the stage in 2002 with Dímelo en la calle (Let's Take It Outside). He later released a double album called Diario de un peatón (Diary of A Pedestrian), which included both his previous album and 12 new songs, along with a book illustrated by him.
In 2005 his new record Alivio de luto (Mourning Relief), put him in track to being one of the biggest names in Spanish musical stardom. The album comes with a DVD that includes interviews, music videos, acoustic versions of the songs and some home-made recordings.

Lo que duran dos peces de hielo
En un whisky on the Rocks
En vez de fingir
O, estrellarme una copa de celos
Le dio por reír
De pronto me vi
Como un perro de nadie
Me dejó un neceser con agravios
La miel en los labios
Y escarcha en el pelo
Tenían razón
Mis amantes
En eso de que, antes
El malo era yo
Con una excepción
Esta vez
Yo quería quererla querer
Y ella no
Así que se fue
Me dejó el corazón
En los huesos
Y yo de rodillas
Desde el taxi
Y, haciendo un exceso
Me tiró dos besos
Uno por mejilla
Y regresé
A la maldición
Del cajón sin su ropa
A la perdición
De los bares de copas
A las cenicientas
De saldo y esquina
Y, por esas ventas
Del fino laina
Pagando las cuentas
De gente sin alma
Que pierde la calma
Con la cocaína
Volviéndome loco
Derrochando
La bolsa y la vida
La fui, poco a poco
Dando por perdida
Y eso que yo
Para no agobiar con
Flores a María
Para no asediarla
Con mi antología
De sábanas frías
Y alcobas vacías
Para no comprarla
Con bisutería
Ni ser el fantoche
Que va, en romería
Con la cofradía
Del santo reproche
Tanto la quería
Que, tardé, en aprender
A olvidarla, diecinueve días
Y quinientas noches
Dijo hola y adiós
Y, el portazo, sonó
Como un signo de interrogación
Sospecho que, así
Se vengaba, a través del olvido
Cupido de mi
No pido perdón
¿Para qué? Si me va a perdonar
Porque ya no le importa
Siempre tuvo la frente muy alta
La lengua muy larga
Y la falda muy corta
Me abandonó
Como se abandonan
Los zapatos viejos
Destrozó el cristal
De mis gafas de lejos
Sacó del espejo
Su vivo retrato
Y, fui, tan torero
Por los callejones
Del juego y el vino
Que, ayer, el portero
Me echó del casino
De Torrelodones
Qué pena tan grande
Negaría el santo sacramento
En el mismo momento
Que ella me lo mande
Y eso que yo
Para no agobiar con
Flores a María
Para no asediarla
Con mi antología
De sábanas frías
Y alcobas vacías
Para no comprarla
Con bisutería
Ni ser el fantoche
Que va, en romería
Con la cofradía
Del santo reproche
Tanto la quería
Que, tardé, en aprender
A olvidarla, diecinueve días
Y quinientas noches
Y regresé
A la maldición
Del cajón sin su ropa
A la perdición
De los bares de copas
A las cenicientas
De saldo y esquina
Y, por esas ventas
Del fino laina
Pagando las cuentas
De gente sin alma
Que pierde la calma
The lyrics to Joaquín Sabina's "19 dias y 500 noches" are about lost love and heartbreak. The singer describes a failed relationship that only lasted as long as two ice fish in a whiskey on the rocks. Instead of pretending or getting jealous, his lover laughed and left him feeling like a dog barking at the gates of heaven. She left him a kit of grievances and the taste of honey on his lips, and he felt abandoned and hopeless.
The singer reflects on his past behavior in relationships, acknowledging that his former lovers were right to call him the bad guy, except for this one time. He wanted to love this woman, but she did not feel the same, and so she left him with a broken heart. He tries to move on, but he only falls deeper into despair, turning to alcohol and drugs to numb his pain. He reminisces about the love he had for her, but eventually learns to move on after 19 days and 500 nights.
The song is a powerful exploration of heartbreak and the lengths we go to forget a lost love. Sabina's mournful voice delivers the lyrics with a raw emotion that captures the singer's sense of sadness, desperation, and regret. The song has become a classic in Spanish music and holds a special place in the hearts of many fans.
