Desafinado
Jobim & Mendonca Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Eu possuo apenas o que Deus me deu
Se você insiste em classificar
Meu comportamento anti-musical
No fundo do peito bate calado
No peito dos desafinados
Também bate um coração
The song "Desafinado" by Jobim & Mendonca is a poignant expression of love, musical individuality, and human connection. The opening lines of the song are an admission of vulnerability by the singer, who expresses the immense pain that would occur if their beloved were to criticize their singing as "off-key". The second verse of the song involves the singer defending their anti-musical behavior, claiming that their music is "bossa nova" and therefore natural. The chorus of the song is a reminder that even the "desafinados" or out-of-tune have hearts and are capable of feeling love, despite society's preoccupation with musical perfection.
The last verse of the song takes a poetic turn, with the singer reflecting on the power of the heart and the incredible hurt that can be caused by someone they love. The imagery of the Rolleyflex camera highlights the betrayal that the singer experiences from their beloved, but despite the pain, the singer reminds the beloved that their love is the greatest thing they will ever find. The song poignantly concludes with the reminder to the beloved that "no peito dos desafinados" or in the hearts of the out-of-tune, there also beats a heart.

Portuguese has to be the most beautiful language in the world. I was enthralled back in the early '70's, hearing Jobim's music. Have most of his albums, along with a fave of mine - Stan Getz, and all he brought to the sound. I do understand a little, speaking a little Spanish ! We're so lucky to have access to these albums now. For me? It's again. I love it.
