Spectrum
Jocelyn Scofield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When we first came here
We were cold and we were clear
With no colors on our skin
We were light and paper thin
And when we first came here
We were cold and we were clear
With no colors on our skin
Until we let the spectrum in
Say my name
As every color illuminates
We are shining
And we will never be afraid again
Say my name
As every color illuminates
We are shining
And we will never be afraid again
Say my name
As every color illuminates
We are shining
And we will never be afraid again
When we come for you
We'll be dressed up all in blue
With the ocean in our arms
Kiss your eyes and kiss your palms
And when it's time to pray
We'll be dressed up all in grey
With metal on our tongues
And silver in our lungs
Say my name
As every color illuminates
We are shining
And we will never be afraid again
Say my name
As every color illuminates
We are shining
And we will never be afraid again
Say my name
As every color illuminates
We are shining
And we will never be afraid again
And when we come back we'll be dressed in black
And you'll scream our names aloud
And we won't eat and we won't sleep
We'll drag bodies from the graves
Say my name
As every color illuminates
We are shining
And we will never be afraid again
Say my name
As every color illuminates

We are shining
And we will never be afraid again

Overall Meaning

Jocelyn Scofield's "Spectrum" is a song about coming into oneself and embracing one's true identity, a message that is conveyed through the use of colors as a metaphor for "skin" and "identity". In the beginning of the song, the lyrics describe the singer and their cohorts as "cold and clear" with "no colors on our skin", representing their lack of individual identity. However, as the song progresses, they begin to welcome different colors or traits into their lives, becoming more vibrant and unique. The phrase "Say my name" is repeated throughout the song, and with each repetition, it represents a newfound affirmation and validation of their true selves, as seen through the illuminating colors.

The second half of the song takes a darker turn, with the mention of blue, grey, metal, and silver. This may represent a societal pressure for uniformity or conformity being pushed upon the individuals who have rejected that in the beginning of the song. They also speak of returning dressed in black, which could be seen as a symbol of mourning, oppression, or perhaps reclaiming their identity. The line "We'll drag bodies from graves" could be interpreted as the metaphorical killing of outdated societal norms that have held them back in the past. The final repetition of "Say my name" represents the ultimate triumph of the individual over societal norms and expectations.
