Numb
Jodie Marie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I visited the places that we used to go hand in hand
Now we are walking alone I take things I shouldn’t
just to replace the one falling deeper and deeper
Uncontrollably numb

Fading pictures faced down by my bed
Bottles of wine replace you instead
Long way passport realize this mess
Your name on my lips lingers through sadness

I hear your footsteps in the house
Your voice now holds these walls
With words you once said to me
Made me feel good about myself
I was captured about those eyes
Don’t know exactly what you held

Fading pictures faced down by my bed
Bottles of wine replace you instead
Long way passport realize this mess
Your name on my lips lingers through sadness

I stop for those habits
The ones that made you side
I promise I do everything right
So please don’t let me hear you say goodbye

Long way passport realize this mess
Your name on my lips lingers through sadness
Your name on my lips lingers through sadness

Your name on my lips lingers through sadness
Your name on my lips lingers through sadness

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Numb" by Jodie Marie are a poignant depiction of the aftermath of a breakup. The first verse talks about the singer's attempts to relive memories of a time when she walked hand in hand with her partner, and how, now that they've separated, she feels numb and falls for things she shouldn't, just to fill the void. The second verse reveals the mess her life has become in the wake of the breakup - pictures by her bed are turned down, empty wine bottles replace her ex, and she realizes how far her pain has taken her through her passport. The chorus repeats the refrain that her ex's memory still haunts her, and she can't seem to escape the sadness she feels in their absence.

The bridge of the song gives us insight into the singer's state of mind. She hears their ex's voice echoing in the empty house, and their words flash back, filling her with self-worth. She remembers how enamored she was by their eyes, even if she can't recall what she saw in them. She begs for a second chance to prove that she can change, to fix her mistakes and make her ex see that she deserves another chance.
