Teen Angel
Jody Wayne Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
(Teen angel)
That fateful night
The car was stalled upon the railroad track
I pulled you out
And we were safe
But you went running back
Teen angel
Can you hear me?
Teen angel
Can you see me?
Are you somewhere up above?
And I am still your own true love?
(Teen angel)
(Teen angel)
What was it you
Were looking for
That took your life that night?
They said they found my high school ring
Clutched in your fingers tight
Teen angel
Can you hear me?
Teen angel
Can you see me?
Are you somewhere up above?
And I am still your own true love?
(Teen angel)
(Teen angel)
Just sweet sixteen
And now you're gone
They've taken you
Away
I'll never kiss
Your lips again
Until my dying day
Teen angel
Can you hear me?
Teen angel
Can you see me?
Are you somewhere up above?
And I am still your own true love?
(Teen angel)
Teen angel
(Teen angel)
Teen angel
(Teen angel)
The song "Teen Angel" by Jody Wayne is a heartfelt ballad about the loss of a teenage love. The lyrics describe the tragic event where the singer's girlfriend gets caught on a railroad track and is saved by him but, despite his efforts, she goes back to retrieve something and dies. The song is a cry for her to listen and look out for him from above as he is still her "own true love".
The verse "What was it you were looking for that took your life that night? They said they found my high school ring, Clutched in your fingers tight" shows that the singer is still searching for answers as to why she risked her life. The line highlights the intimacy of their relationship as the ring held sentimental value to both of them.
The use of the phrase "teen angel" repeatedly is not only the title but also the way the singer sees his late girlfriend -- describing her youth, innocence and purity -- and the phrase "Are you somewhere up above?" shows his belief in an afterlife where his girlfriend is "looking out" for him which gives him consolation.
