You're Not Alone
Joe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Heartbeat, when you're not around it's beating slow
And it's something that I've never known, oh whoa
I'll be, I'll be the answer you've been waiting for
I'll be the truth that you've been looking for, oh whoa

You're not alone, we're in this together
All that you want is right here forever
And they don't need to know, oh oh oh
And they don't need to know

You're not alone, we're in this together
All that you want, I'm right here forever
And they don't need to know, oh oh oh
And they don't need to know

You're free, free to let go 'cause I'll be here for you
And when you fall I'll be your parachute, oh whoa
I, I, I feel like I'm dancing in the sky
I come alive when I'm with you
I come alive when I'm with you

You're not alone, we're in this together
All that you want is right here forever
And they don't need to know, oh oh oh
And they don't need to know

I, I, I feel like I'm dancing in the sky
I come alive when I'm with you
I come alive when I'm with you

Don't speak, your smile tells me all I need to know
Your eyes show me where I want to go, oh whoa

You're not alone, we're in this together
All that you want is right here forever
And they don't need to know, oh oh oh
And they don't need to know

I, I, I feel like I'm dancing in the sky

I come alive when I'm with you
I come alive when I'm with you

Overall Meaning

The song "You're Not Alone" by Joe and Jake is a heartfelt message of support and companionship for someone going through a tough time. The chorus repeats the phrase "you're not alone, we're in this together," emphasizing the importance of having someone there for you during difficult times. The verses describe the singer's dedication to being that person, offering love, honesty, and support. The line "your smile tells me all I need to know, your eyes show me where I want to go" suggests that the singer is attuned to the other person's emotions and wants to follow them wherever they may lead.

The song's upbeat melody and anthemic chorus create a feeling of solidarity and hope, even in the face of adversity. It's a reminder that even when things are tough, we can find strength and comfort in each other. The lyrics also suggest a romantic connection between the two singers, though it could just as easily be interpreted as a platonic friendship or familial bond.

It was shot so wonderfully and the performances….insane. Good insane.

But usually I’m a “running for the door guy”when a movie ends. These vocals….SO GOOD and so well produced. I was locked in my seat—hands on my heart with my mouth open sobbing…then laughing that I was sobbing. For the record, last time I did that was when the Seahawks lost the Super Bowl on the two yard line. Ha.

But…Devotion and 1917….both EASILY my favorite war movies. Was great to learn about Corsairs…and—don’t get me wrong—I appreciate all 478 Nam and WW2 movies. Love some.

But this one had so much heart. I wanna go again :)

This song means so much to me than it may for anyone else. Earlier in November, my Grandpa said he'd take my little brother and I to see Devotion in theaters. Later that month, he got sick and had to go to the hospital. And afterward, he started to get sicker. Doctor's said it was gas, but we later learned he was priming for a heart attack/stroke.

On December 4th, 2022... there was a fire near where we lived with what looked like almost 20 fire engines/ambulances and what not. So after we'd did our routine with my Grandma, of going to sheetz and getting a cup of hot tea. We went over to check out the fire, my grandpa was both a fireman and a Veteran of the United States Air Force.

After we saw what everything was about, we started to head back to the car. My grandpa was strong as fort knox and we never knew anything was wrong, but on the way back he confessed he had trouble balancing and standing. So I let him hold onto me as we walked, he kept saying he needed to get to the car... Where my grandma was at... But as we turned the corner, I looked back at his face, and told him to sit down. He later collapsed and I held him in my arms until EMS could arrive. When we got to the hospital, we found out they were able to restart his heart. He later passed away at 4am on December 5th, 2022.

He is my hero, my friend, and the only person who was ever like a father to me. He raised me!

So tonight, honoring our original plans. I bought a ticket for him, me, and my brother to this movie; Devotion. Toward the end, we were crying but when this played... It damn near broke us... This song has a sentimental meaning to us. We later took a picture outside the auditorium near a poster. Me and my brother kneeled by the bench, while we left the bench empty under the poster. Just for him...

Rest in peace, pap. We love you, miss you, and cherish every moment we had... You will forever live on as a part of us.

December 27th, 1954 - December 5th, 2022.
Tech Sergeant (ret.) - United States Air Force.

Great story and a perfect song to end it

@Edwin6932

Hudner received a Medal of Honor for risking his life to save Brown life. That right there is the definition of devotion. I read about both of them in Google and their story must be told to everyone.

Joe’s voice only seems to get better and better over the years. His range is incredible. Khalid is amazing also. I wouldn’t be surprised if they got the Oscar nomination that’s been buzzing around.
