Strawberry Fields Forever
Joe Anderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let me take you down
'Cause I going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever

Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me

No one I think is in my tree
I mean it must be high or low
That is the catch you know
Tune in but it's all right

That is I think it's not too bad
Always know sometimes think it's me
But you know I know when it's a dream

I think I know, I mean, oh yes, but it's all wrong
That is I think I disagree

Overall Meaning

The song Strawberry Fields by Joe Anderson and Jim Sturgess is a psychedelic masterpiece from the 2007 movie Across the Universe, drawing its inspiration from the famous spot in Central Park, New York City. The lyrics are surreal and whimsical, talking about the singer's desire to take the listener to Strawberry Fields where nothing is real and there is nothing to worry about. This creative landscape is a representation of the Beatle's childhood memories, John Lennon's in particular.

The lyrics of the song encapsulate the feeling of escapism and a longing for a simpler time. The lines"Living is easy with eyes closed, Misunderstanding all you see" suggests the concept of living life blindly without getting caught up in the complexities. The following lines, "It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, It doesn't matter much to me" imply the pressure of conforming to societal norms while also hinting at the singer's indifference towards it. The use of "strawberry fields forever", is the ultimate metaphor for eternal happiness and an escape from reality.

Notably, the lines "No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low, That is the catch you know, Tune in but it's all right" references Lewis Carroll’s β€œThrough the Looking Glass”. Alice encounters the White King and longs for a β€œquiet life,” to which the king replies, β€œThe rule is, jam tomorrow and jam yesterdayβ€”but never jam today.” This conversation serves as a metaphor for the impossibility of someone living for in both the past and the present simultaneously, and is perhaps why Lennon references it here.
