Joe Arroyo was born in Cartagena. At the age of ten he was already singing in one of Cartagenas' popular music halls. His father had 40 sons with different women, a story that he usually tells.
In the year 1971 Arroyo had his biggest opportunity of becoming a nationally known artist. He was discovered by Ernesto Estrada, the bass player and singer of the band "Fruko y sus Tesos" (Fruko and his buddies) and signed up with Colombian record label Discos Fuentes. With the band he performed for ten years until in 1981 when he began his solo career leading his own band, named "La Verdad" (The truth).
Joe Arroyo became very successful by mixing salsa, merengue, soca, zouk and other Afro-American music beats in a unique style that has earned him the prefix of Sonero de la Salsa by renown critics and fans.
Born in Cartagena de Indias, 1 November 1955 – Died in Barranquilla, 26 July 2011

De la historia negra, de la historia nuestra, caballero
Y dice así
Uh
Dice
En los años mil seiscientos
Cuando el tirano mandó
Aquella historia vivió
Cuando aquí
Llegaban esos negreros
Africanos en cadenas
Besaban mi tierra
Esclavitud perpetua
Esclavitud perpetua
Esclavitud perpetua
Que lo diga Salomé
¿Tú qué tené? Epa
Chango, chango, chango
Un matrimonio africano
Esclavos de un español
Él les daba muy mal trato
Y a su negra le pegó
Y fue allí
Se revelo el negro guapo
Tomó venganza por su amor
Y aún se escucha en la verja
No le pegue a mi negra
(No le pegue a la negra)
(No le pegue a la negra)
Oye men, no le pegue a la negra
(No le pegue a la negra)
No, no, no, no, no, no
(No le pegue a la negra)
Oye, esa negra se me respeta
(No le pegue a la negra)
Eh, que aún se escucha, se escucha en la verja
(No le pegue a la negra)
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Uh
(No le pegue a la negra)
The song Rebelion by Joe Arroyo Y La Verdad is a powerful protest song that exposes the history of slavery and oppression in Cartagena, Colombia. The verse begins by stating that the singer wants to tell a small part of the history of the black people, of their own history. The lyrics describe the arrival of African slaves on the shores of Colombia and the brutality they faced under Spanish colonialism. The song tells the story of a married African couple who were slaves to Spanish colonizers; the husband rebels against his master when he beats his wife, by taking revenge for his love. The chorus repeatedly emphasizes, "No le pegue a la negra" ("Don't hit the black woman"), urging the oppressors to stop their violence and cruel treatment of black people.
The song is replete with cultural and historical references, highlighting the African diaspora, slavery, and colonialism. "Rebelion" is a powerful protest song that talks about the struggle for liberation, resistance, and the unapologetic pride of black people. The lyrics are a call to action for those who have been oppressed to stand up and fight against injustice. The song symbolizes Afro-Colombian identity and is considered an anthem for human rights and equality. It teaches about the importance of standing up against oppression and advocating for social justice.
