Can't Let You Go
Joe Bonamassa & Beth Hart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You told me baby one more time
Won’t make me sit on the lonely ride

Well it’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

I’m like a fish out of water stuck in the tree
You don’t even wanna talk to me

Well it’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

He won’t take me back when I come around
Says he’s sorry then he puts me out
I got a big chain around my neck
And I’m broken down like a train wreck

Well it’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

Said I got a candle that burns so bright
In my way up every night

Well it’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

You don’t like a seaman standing around
Feel like I’ve been shot back and down

Well it’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

He won’t take me back when I come around
Says he’s sorry then he puts me out
I got a big chain around my neck
And I’m broken down like a train wreck

Well it’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

Turn off the trouble like you turn off a light
Went off and let me, it just ain’t right

Well it’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

I ran at the corner, there is something to see
Brings it out round back where I used to be

Well it’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

He won’t take me back when I come around
Says he’s sorry then he puts me out
I got a big chain around my neck
And I’m broken down like a train wreck

Well it’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

He won’t take me back when I come around
Says he’s sorry then he puts me out
I got a big chain around my neck
And I’m broken down like a train wreck

Well it’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

Can’t let go
Can’t let go
It’s over
I know I thought I can’t let go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart's song "Can't Let You Go" are a reflection of a troubled relationship that has come to an end. The singer is struggling to move on, despite knowing that the relationship is over. The opening lines, "you told me baby one more time, won’t make me sit on the lonely ride," suggest that the singer is aware that they have been in this position before, and that the relationship has ended multiple times. However, they continue to hold on, believing that they can't let go.

The following lines "I’m like a fish out of water stuck in the tree, you don’t even wanna talk to me" indicate that the singer feels out of place and unwanted in the relationship. They are unable to communicate with their partner and feel trapped. The repetition of the phrase "well it's over, I know I thought I can't let go" highlights the internal struggle that the singer is experiencing, as they try to come to terms with the end of the relationship.

The final lines, "can't let go, can't let go, it's over, I know I thought I can't let go" suggest that the singer is still struggling to fully let go, despite knowing that it is necessary for their own well-being. The repetition of the phrase adds to the sense of desperation and hopelessness that the singer is feeling.

First fell in love with this Randy Weeks song when Lucinda Williams performed it on Austin City Limits, then got to hear Lucinda sing it live at two concerts in Portland and a third at Seattle's Bumbershoot Arts Festival (her stage was directly underneath the Space Needle). Beth and Joe blow the roof off the dump with this version!

I am speechless, I have no words. Listened to your album, Seesaw this morning through my headphones, whilst walking on the Table View beachfront with spectacular views of Table Bay mountain across the ocean. WOW! Joe and Beth, you are simply outstanding. I think I survived Corona twice to be able to continue enjoying your brilliance. Tx for warming my life with your musical honesty. I have Lucinda Williams' version of this on CD & always thought it was a great song. Came here to see if anyone else had covered it. Not familiar with this band but they do a great job. It's a badass song, written by Randy Weeks.
