His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window". A hastily thrown together 1970 US tour led to the live double-album Mad Dogs & Englishmen, which featured an all-star band organized by Leon Russell. His 1974 recording of "You Are So Beautiful" reached number five in the US, and became his signature song. Cocker's best selling song was the US number one "Up Where We Belong", a duet with Jennifer Warnes that earned a 1983 Grammy Award. He released a total of 22 studio albums over a 43-year recording career.
In 1993, Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male. He was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown in 2007, and received an OBE the following year for services to music. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list.

A Woman Loves a Man
Joe Cocker Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Each and every rule of the game
Still remains a mystery to me
By any other name
Why she can't make up her mind
While he decides to stay
While one surrenders
But it's too much to understand
Still a man loves a woman; and
When a woman loves a man
A woman loves a man
She does what she can do
He does the best he can
When a woman loves a man
A woman loves a man
She does what she can do
He does the best he can
And I look into her eyes
When the world is out of hand
And I'm so happy
When a woman loves a man
When a woman loves a man
A woman loves a man
A woman loves a man
No moon tonight
No nothing to guide me
Still I will find her
Standing beside me
No moon tonight
There's nothing to guide me
But still I will find her
Standing beside me
There's darkness everywhere
Still I'll find her
Standing beside me
Standing beside me
She's a woman of strength
He's a man of conviction
But sometimes the truth
Is stronger than fiction
When a woman loves a man
A woman loves a man
She does what she can do
He does the best he can
When a woman loves a man
When that woman loves a man
She does what she can do
He does the best he can
No moon tonight
No nothing to guide me
Still I will find her
Standing beside me
No moon tonight
No nothing to guide me
Still I will find her
Standing beside me
No moon tonight
Nothing to guide me
Still I will find her
Standing beside me
When a woman loves a man
A woman loves a man
She does what she can do
But I do all I can
The lyrics of Joe Cocker's song "A Woman Loves a Man" express the complexity of romantic relationships. The first verse establishes the fact that love itself is a mystery, unable to be comprehensively understood or explained. The second verse refers to the different ways men and women approach a relationship, with women possessing a greater level of indecision and men being more likely to commit. Despite these differences, the chorus emphasizes that both partners do what they can to make the relationship work and support each other.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of determination and conviction, particularly in lines such as "No moon tonight, no nothing to guide me, still I will find her standing beside me." This speaks to the power of love to drive individuals to overcome obstacles and find each other, no matter the circumstances. The final verse hints at the potential for conflict and obstacles in a relationship, but ultimately reaffirms the idea that true love can overcome these challenges.
