His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window". A hastily thrown together 1970 US tour led to the live double-album Mad Dogs & Englishmen, which featured an all-star band organized by Leon Russell. His 1974 recording of "You Are So Beautiful" reached number five in the US, and became his signature song. Cocker's best selling song was the US number one "Up Where We Belong", a duet with Jennifer Warnes that earned a 1983 Grammy Award. He released a total of 22 studio albums over a 43-year recording career.
In 1993, Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male. He was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown in 2007, and received an OBE the following year for services to music. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list.

Midnight Without You
Joe Cocker Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They Disappear Like You
Stars Are Falling The Time Is Changing
To Midnight Without You
So I Walk Out
The Streets And Alleys Round Here
The Taxi's Heading On Uptown Again
And Every Night I Know
The Cost Of Letting Go
Is Midnight Without You Yeah
It's Midnight Without You Yeah
And Though I Might Want To
I Just Can't Stand The Cold In You
I'd Do Anything But Go Through, Yeah
This Midnight Without You
No, No
Midnight Without You
This Midnight Without You
Midnight Without You
I Walk Out
Clock On The Wall Steps In The Hall
The lyrics to Joe Cocker's song "Midnight Without You" are a poignant and introspective reflection on the cost of losing someone you love, and the loneliness and sense of emptiness that can follow. The opening lines, "Look At The Cars Going Nowhere Fast, They Disappear Like You" evoke a feeling of transience, of everything passing by in a blur, like the cars rushing past. The mention of stars falling and the changing of time to midnight without the person, adds to the sense of loss and a profound sense of grief.
As the song progresses, the focus shifts to the singer himself and the things he does to try and fill the void left by the absence of his loved one. He walks the streets and alleys of the city, sees taxis rushing by, observes people waiting at train stations, all the while acutely aware of how much he has lost. The chorus "And every night I know, the cost of letting go is midnight without you" is a testament to how much the singer values the person who is no longer with him, recognizing that the cost of losing them is being left with a gaping hole in his life.
Overall, "Midnight Without You" is a poignant depiction of loss, desire, and the human condition. The lyrics are powerful and emotive, capturing the universal experience of losing someone you love and the yearning that follows.
