His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window". A hastily thrown together 1970 US tour led to the live double-album Mad Dogs & Englishmen, which featured an all-star band organized by Leon Russell. His 1974 recording of "You Are So Beautiful" reached number five in the US, and became his signature song. Cocker's best selling song was the US number one "Up Where We Belong", a duet with Jennifer Warnes that earned a 1983 Grammy Award. He released a total of 22 studio albums over a 43-year recording career.
In 1993, Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male. He was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown in 2007, and received an OBE the following year for services to music. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list.

My Father
Joe Cocker Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My father's son
I live my life, just like
My father's done
If he'd've told me, one day
That somebody'd have my heart in chains
Would I believe it? No way
Made up my mind I'd never fall that way
But tell me why
Every time I try to tell you it's goodbye
I can't seem to let go
In my heart I know I want to stay
What I'm trying to say
Heart over mind
Yes I'm my father's son
And I'm inclined to do
As my father's done
Here I am with you
And I know that it's true
Despite all the feelings
You're putting me through
I try to walk away, something makes me stay
Heart over mind, yes I'm
My father's son
I live my life, just like
My father's done
But tell me why
Every time I try to tell you it's goodbye
I can't seem to let go
In my heart, I know I want to stay, what I'm trying to say
Heart over mind
Yes I'm my father's son
And I live my life just like
My father's done
If he had told me, one day
That somebody'd have my heart in chains
Would I believe it? No way
Made up my mind, I'd never fall that way
Heart over mind, yes I'm
My father's son
And I'm inclined to do
As my father's done
Heart over mind, yes I'm
My father's son
The lyrics to Joe Cocker's song "My Father's Son" explore the theme of following in one's fathers' footsteps and the struggle to break away from that legacy. Cocker touches on the conflict of wanting to be independent and make one's own choices, but ultimately feeling drawn to repeat the patterns of their upbringing out of a sense of loyalty or obligation.
Cocker sings, "Heart over mind, yes I'm my father's son," indicating that he inherited his father's personality traits and habits. The lyrics depict Cocker trying to resist the desire to be with someone who has a hold on his heart, but feeling incapable of letting go. He admits, "made up my mind I'd never fall that way," but his heart seems to have a different idea. The song's chorus reinforces the idea that Cocker is unable to escape his father's influence, as he sings, "And I'm inclined to do as my father's done."
The song's conflict ultimately shows the struggle of breaking free from the past and forging one's own path. It highlights the tension between the desire for independence and identity, while still maintaining a sense of familial loyalty and obedience.
