His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window". A hastily thrown together 1970 US tour led to the live double-album Mad Dogs & Englishmen, which featured an all-star band organized by Leon Russell. His 1974 recording of "You Are So Beautiful" reached number five in the US, and became his signature song. Cocker's best selling song was the US number one "Up Where We Belong", a duet with Jennifer Warnes that earned a 1983 Grammy Award. He released a total of 22 studio albums over a 43-year recording career.
In 1993, Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male. He was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown in 2007, and received an OBE the following year for services to music. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list.

On My Way Home
Joe Cocker Lyrics

Somebody must change
You are the reason I've been waiting so long
Somebody holds the key
Well I'm weary and I just ain't got the time
And I'm wasted and I can't find my way home
Somebody must change
You are the reason I've been waiting all these years
Somebody holds the key
Well I'm weary and I just ain't got the time, oh no
'Cause I'm wasted and I can't find my way home
Well I'm weary and I just ain't got the time, oh no
'Cause I'm wasted and I can't find my way home
Can't find my way home
I ain't done nothing wrong
But I, I can't find my way home
(Can't find my way home)
(No I can't find my way home)
(Oh, I can't find my way home)
Oh, I ain't done nothing wrong
(Oh, I can't find my way home)
The lyrics to Joe Cocker's "Can't Find My Way Home" suggest a sense of lostness and confusion. The first line, "Come down off your throne and leave your body alone," could symbolize detachment from the physical self in search of spiritual existence. Then the lyrics shift to the idea that something must change, indicating a desire to find a new path or direction. The following line, "You are the reason I've been waiting so long, somebody holds the key," could signify searching for a solution or guide to finding their way.
The chorus reiterates the sense of lostness and confusion. The line "Well I'm weary and I just ain't got the time" could represent the feeling of being tired and out of energy, suggesting a need for rest and rejuvenation. The phrase "I'm wasted" may allude to the idea of being in a state of limbo and feeling as though they've wasted time chasing their goals. The repetition of the line "Can't find my way home" adds to the sense of disorientation, while the final line "I ain't done nothing wrong" may suggest a certain level of resignation, as though they accept that they've done their best and things still haven't worked out.
Overall, the lyrics to "Can't Find My Way Home" convey the feeling of being lost and disconnected, searching for a guide or solution that will point them towards the right path. The song is oftentimes seen as a representation of the struggles with addiction, but it also resonates with anyone who feels a sense of displacement or confusion in their lives.

"On my way home
I'm on my way home
That's where I belong
An' now the time has come, it's time we must go
Cos now the tides have changed, we're moving on
I'm on my way home
Life must carry on
So after all the pain and, what we've been through
To give up now would be, oh so wrong
Come what may, we're being counted on
It's our day, this is our song
Do you know what's waiting there for you
(nothing holds me here)
If nothing's left there to go back to
Believe me anything is better than what we have now
(turn around, turn around the hands of time)
It can't be any worse, and I've got time to spare
Do you think it's worth all the bother
(someone has to do it)
If nothing works out right anyhow
So all that we can do is try and try, try more everyday
(turn around, turn around the hands of time)
If there's a will, there'll be a way
I'm on my way home
There's no turning back
And after all that has been done, and has been shed
it's our last chance, to keep on track
I'm on my way home
Although the road may be long
There is no river we can't cross, or mountain we can't climb
Because our faith is much too strong..."

"De retour chez moi
Je reviens chez moi
C'est là d'où je viens
Et maintenant, le temps est venu, il est temps pour nous de partir
Car maintenant les marées ont changé, on passe à autre chose
Je reviens chez moi
La vie doit continuer
Après toute cette douleur et tout ce que nous avons vécu
Abandonner maintenant serait tellement injuste
Advienne que pourra, on compte sur nous
C'est notre jour, c'est notre chanson
Sais-tu ce qui t'attend là-bas ?
(rien ne me retient ici)

(Turn around, turn around the hands of time)
We've had thunder, I can stand the rain
Someone has to do it
(Nothing works out right anyhow)
'Cos if the cause is right, it's always worth, all the trouble spent
(Turn around, turn around the hands of time)
Even in battles lost, the good win in the end
Someone has to do it
(Nothing works out right anyhow)
'Cos there's no river too deep, no mountain too high
(Turn around, turn around the hands of time)
There's nothing stopping us, we shall get by

Me and a special girl who had not seen each other for twenty years, and through the strangest twist of fate met each other again found that we both loved this song, and listened to it over and over together.
