His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window". A hastily thrown together 1970 US tour led to the live double-album Mad Dogs & Englishmen, which featured an all-star band organized by Leon Russell. His 1974 recording of "You Are So Beautiful" reached number five in the US, and became his signature song. Cocker's best selling song was the US number one "Up Where We Belong", a duet with Jennifer Warnes that earned a 1983 Grammy Award. He released a total of 22 studio albums over a 43-year recording career.
In 1993, Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male. He was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown in 2007, and received an OBE the following year for services to music. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list.

Out of the Blue
Joe Cocker Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Out of this world
Out of this mind
Out of this love for you
Out of this world
Out of the blue
Out of this love for you
Sometimes I don't know you
But that's allright
I'm a stranger here myself
She don't shed a tear
When I walk out that door
She knows, she knows
I'll be coming back for more
[Chorus]
It's in the cards
It's written in the stars
It's in the wee-wee hours
In some lonely bar
She don't stay up all night
And walk the floor
She knows damn well
I'll be coming back for more
[Chorus]
The song “Out of the Blue” by Joe Cocker is a ballad about a complicated and tumultuous relationship. The chorus features the repetition of the phrase “out of this world, out of this mind, out of this love for you,” as if the singer is trying to capture the overwhelming and irrational nature of his feelings for his lover. The phrase “out of the blue” adds to this sense of unpredictability and suddenness.
The verses suggest that the singer’s relationship is unstable and fraught with misunderstandings. He confesses that sometimes he doesn’t recognize his lover, which suggests that perhaps they are going through changes or that their communication has broken down. However, he seems to view this as a normal and acceptable aspect of their relationship, saying “I’m a stranger here myself.” The line “She don’t shed a tear when I walk out that door” implies that the two have grown used to each other leaving and that it doesn't affect them negatively anymore--and that their love is strong enough to endure these ups and downs.
The phrase “it’s in the cards” implies that the course of their relationship has already been predetermined and they’re simply following its path. “It’s written in the stars” suggests that their love is fated or destined. However, the line “in some lonely bar” contrasts with these ideas of fate and destiny, emphasizing the sordid and mundane aspects of their relationship. The final repetition of the chorus suggests that no matter what their relationship brings them--whether it's out of this world or out of their minds--the singer’s love for this person will always endure.
