His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window". A hastily thrown together 1970 US tour led to the live double-album Mad Dogs & Englishmen, which featured an all-star band organized by Leon Russell. His 1974 recording of "You Are So Beautiful" reached number five in the US, and became his signature song. Cocker's best selling song was the US number one "Up Where We Belong", a duet with Jennifer Warnes that earned a 1983 Grammy Award. He released a total of 22 studio albums over a 43-year recording career.
In 1993, Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male. He was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown in 2007, and received an OBE the following year for services to music. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list.

Stay The Same
Joe Cocker Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We're trying to figure it all out
We're so close but feel so far
Wishing we weren't quit who we are
And we say
Some other love, some other face
Some other time, some other place
Maybe the more we're trying to change
Maybe the more we'll stay the same
Maybe the more we're trying to change
Maybe the more we'll stay the same
We stay the same
Our hearts are warm and free
We're trying to find the love we've created
But deep inside we rearrange
Trying to fill that lonely space
And we say
Some other love, some other face
Some other time, some other place
Some other path, some other way
(Today)
Maybe the more we're trying to change
Maybe the more we'll stay the same
Maybe the more we're trying to change
Maybe the more we'll stay the same
I think we've seen what we want to see
I think we've needed what we really need
Maybe we are just who we are
We are
We are
Maybe the more we're trying to change
Maybe the more we'll stay the same
Maybe the more we're trying to change
Maybe the more we'll stay the same.
The song "Stay The Same" by Joe Cocker is a contemplative and introspective piece about the complexities of life and how it can sometimes seem like we're constantly trying to change, grow, and evolve, but in the end, we remain the same. The lyrics suggest a sense of frustration and confusion as we struggle to navigate the ups and downs of life and find our place in the world. Despite our efforts to find love and happiness, we're often left feeling unfulfilled and searching for something more.
The line "We're so close but feel so far" captures the feeling of being on the cusp of something great, yet unable to fully grasp it. The repeated phrase "Some other love, some other face, some other time, some other place" suggests a longing for something different, yet we keep coming back to the same patterns and routines that make us who we are. The repeated line "Maybe the more we're trying to change, maybe the more we'll stay the same" is a poignant reminder that sometimes, the very act of trying to change can be what keeps us stuck in the same place.
Overall, "Stay The Same" is a soulful and reflective song that speaks to the struggles and complexities of the human experience. It's a reminder that in a constantly changing world, sometimes the best thing we can do is embrace who we are and stay true to ourselves.
