This is wall to wall sound, so many instruments, bass, guitar, drums, marvelous Hammond organ, bright piano and tambourine/percussion, over the top horns. And the various instrumental solos. The richness of multiple vocalists, all led by Cocker's incredible raw, heartfelt lead vocals. I remember this 1969 version from age 10, onwards. Even fifty- plus years later, it is a tour de force of composition and execution. A great performance and recording, just perfect!

When this was released it was , by the critics, almost universally panned..sounding like a hastily thrown together band..good God, Leon Russell on Keys, Rita Coolige on background vocals, etc.

It was a hastily thrown-together band. But by the end of the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour, they tightened up. That will happen with great musicians.
