His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window". A hastily thrown together 1970 US tour led to the live double-album Mad Dogs & Englishmen, which featured an all-star band organized by Leon Russell. His 1974 recording of "You Are So Beautiful" reached number five in the US, and became his signature song. Cocker's best selling song was the US number one "Up Where We Belong", a duet with Jennifer Warnes that earned a 1983 Grammy Award. He released a total of 22 studio albums over a 43-year recording career.
In 1993, Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male. He was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown in 2007, and received an OBE the following year for services to music. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list.

What You Did to Me Last Night
Joe Cocker Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Smilin' all over the place
I felt so good to myself
I didn't wash my face
I looked in the mirror
To see a halo around my head
I knew that I must be dreamin'
So I got straight back in bed
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
My flesh is glad you found me
Even saved my soul
And if I remember correctly
I'd been alone
It's perfectly frightening to say
That you bruised my mind
I feel like a thousand . . .
No respect for time
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
Gettin' it on...
Said I'm so glad
I saved my love for you
'Cause there's no other woman
Do the things you do
You got me tastin' sweet
When you know that I'm salty
Oh you got me fanky
When you know that I want you
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
All because of what you did to me last night
Oh (baby) what you did to me
Gettin' it on...
The lyrics of Joe Cocker's song "What You Did to Me Last Night" describe the singer waking up in an ecstatic mood, feeling as though he's surrounded by a halo. He mentions having had a dream, which he attributes to the feeling. He then goes on to talk about the person who caused these feelings. He says that they "saved his soul" and his flesh is glad they found him. However, he also describes this person as having "bruised his mind." Despite this, the singer is completely enamored with this person and even thanks them for doing what they did.
The song is an ode to the physical and emotional connection between two people. It celebrates the intensity of a passionate night, and how it can affect someone so powerfully that they wake up feeling completely blissful. The song conveys a sense of gratitude and pure joy that can only be brought upon by the intense bond between two people.
