His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window". A hastily thrown together 1970 US tour led to the live double-album Mad Dogs & Englishmen, which featured an all-star band organized by Leon Russell. His 1974 recording of "You Are So Beautiful" reached number five in the US, and became his signature song. Cocker's best selling song was the US number one "Up Where We Belong", a duet with Jennifer Warnes that earned a 1983 Grammy Award. He released a total of 22 studio albums over a 43-year recording career.
In 1993, Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male. He was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown in 2007, and received an OBE the following year for services to music. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list.

When A Woman Cries
Joe Cocker Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She can wash your world away
When storms fill her eyes, when storms fill her eyes
You never know just what to say
Don't say a word, don't say anything
She don't need your truth or lies
Just hold her close and love her
When a woman cries
When a woman cries, when a woman cries
There is no sadder song
So you apologize
Even if you don't know what you did wrong
But if you really want to make her happy
To stop her sobbing and her sighs
Just hold her close and love her
When a woman cries
Now don't you waste your time thinkin'
Of the right thing to say
Just put your arms around her
'til the clouds roll away
When a woman cries, when a woman cries
She can tear your world apart
When storms fill her eyes, when storms fill her eyes
It can break a, break a man's heart
And if you find that you are cryin' too
Don't let it come as no surprise
Just hold her close and love her
When your woman cries
In Joe Cocker's song "When A Woman Cries," the lyrics explore the emotions and feelings of a woman who is crying. The song describes the heaviness and the burden that women carry, and when they cry, it can wash your world away and even tear your world apart. The storms of emotions inside a woman are often overwhelming, and you never know the right thing to say. The lyrics suggest that there is no need for any explanation during these times, as holding her close and loving her is all that's required.
The song acknowledges that apologizing even if you don't understand the reason behind the tears can lighten the load for the woman. All she needs is just a little affection and reassurance that someone is there for her. The song also implies that women's tears should not be taken lightly, as a man's heart can break when he sees a woman upset.
The song advises not to waste time thinking of the right thing to say, but instead to hold her close and love her until the clouds of emotions roll away. When a woman cries, it is crucial to give her the attention she needs and reassure her that she is supported and loved.
