Up Where We Belong
Joe Cocker featuring Jennifer Warnes Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In a world few hearts survive
All I know is the way I feel
When it's real, I keep it alive
The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world below
Up where the clear winds blow
Some hang on to used to be
Live their lives looking behind
All we have is here and now
All our lives, out there to find
The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Where the clear winds blow
Time goes by
No time to cry
Life's you and I
Alive today
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Where the clear winds blow
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
The song Up Where We Belong, sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, is a powerful ballad about the transformative power of love. The lyrics ask the listener to consider what tomorrow may bring, in a world where few hearts survive. The singer acknowledges that there are many challenges ahead, with long roads and mountains to climb, but that they will take it one step at a time. The song emphasizes the importance of love, and how it can lift us up and help us transcend the difficulties of the world below.
The chorus of the song is particularly powerful, with its soaring melody and lyrics. The refrain "Love lift us up where we belong" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the transformative power of love. The imagery of eagles crying on a mountain high is particularly evocative, suggesting both the beauty and the wildness of the natural world.
The song also acknowledges the importance of living in the present moment. The lyrics warn against dwelling on the past, and instead call on the listener to appreciate the here and now. The final verse emphasizes this idea, as the singer reminds us that time is fleeting, and that we must make the most of our lives while we can.
Overall, Up Where We Belong is a powerful love song with a memorable melody and lyrics that encourage us to embrace love, face challenges with determination, and appreciate the beauty of the world around us.

@GWINE I own four different formats with that song, and all are very good, but you have to hear it at 45 rpm on an LP with a good turn table, It'll blow your mind!

The story is that Jennifer only agreed to record this if they would hire Joe. It was following a very sad part of Joe's life and career. Her love and faith in him was part of his comeback. Any recording you have of this you can see how much she loves him. Joe was a wonderful performer and if you google him and Cocker's Kids you' can find out how much he gave back to his new home in America and to people who deserved second chances. I miss him so much.
