Up Where We Belong
Joe Crocker / Jennifer Warnes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who knows what tomorrow brings
In a world few hearts survive
All I know is the way I feel
When it's real, I keep it alive

The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world below
Up where the clear winds blow

Some hang on to used to be
Live their lives looking behind
All we have is here and now
All our lives, out there to find

The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Where the clear winds blow

Time goes by
No time to cry
Life's you and I
Alive today

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Where the clear winds blow

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry

On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong

Overall Meaning

Up Where We Belong by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes is a song about the power of love to overcome the challenges of life. The lyrics suggest that the world is a difficult place and that many people struggle to find happiness and fulfillment. Nevertheless, the song argues that true love can lift people up above the troubles of the world, allowing them to soar like eagles on a mountain high.

The opening lyrics "Who knows what tomorrow brings, In a world few hearts survive" suggest that the future is uncertain and that the world is a harsh and unforgiving place. However, the next line "All I know is the way I feel, When it's real, I keep it alive" suggests that even in the face of uncertainty and struggle, true love can sustain us. The chorus reinforces this idea, with the repeated refrain "Love lift us up where we belong", suggesting that love has the power to elevate us above the problems of the world and transport us to a place of peace and happiness.

The second verse addresses the idea that some people cling to the past, living their lives looking behind. The lyrics encourage listeners to focus on the present and future instead, recognizing that all we have is here and now, and that our lives are out there to find. The repeated imagery of climbing a mountain suggests that the journey may be difficult, but that with each step forward, we move closer to our destination. The final verse reinforces the idea that time is precious and that we should make the most of every moment, embodying the spirit of living in the present and seizing the opportunities that life presents.

I used this song in the slideshow presentation for the celebration of life for my husband of 41 years. He loved this movie and the acting of Gere and Winger. I hope he is smiling up in heaven.

My husband served in the Navy and the separations, war, injuries and just getting older, was hard but part of our lives. It's the love that lifted us up where we belong that has kept us in good stead. This beautiful song captures our relationship so well. 34 years though trials, tribulations, separations, but nothing keeps us truly apart. I love you, Jimmy. Always and Forever, your "Beautyfull" xo
