Dassin was born in New York City to Jules Dassin (Yiddish actor and film noir director) and Béatrice Launer. He began his childhood first in New York and Los Angeles, California. However after his father became a victim of the anti-communist policies of Senator Joseph McCarthy, he and his family moved from place to place across Europe.
After studying at Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland, Dassin moved back to the United States to go to college at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan after doing very well on his bachelor's exam. After college, he moved back again to France where, while working at a radio station, a record label convinced him to begin to record his songs.
By the early 1970s, Dassin's songs topped the charts in France and he became well known. Probably as a recognition of his parents' left leanings, Dassin's records were officially released in the USSR. However, the political views of his parents were not well known to the general public in the USSR, and Dassin's popularity in the USSR should be connected to his talent only. He was also a talented polyglot, recording songs in German, Spanish, Italian and Greek, as well as French and English.
He died of a heart attack during a vacation to Tahiti on August 20, 1980. He is buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California.

C'est La Vie Lily
Joe Dassin Lyrics

Joe Dassin's song C'est La Vie Lily tells the story of a young woman named Lily who spends her days wandering through the city's streets, selling roses and flirting with soldiers. The song paints a picture of a woman who is admired by many, but ultimately finds herself alone and unhappy in her old age. Dassin sings about the passing of time, highlighting how Lily seems oblivious to its effects, and he emphasizes the cyclical nature of life with the refrain "tourne, tourne" (turn, turn).
The first few stanzas of the song describe Lily's youth and beauty, which captivate the soldiers she meets. However, her lack of fidelity leads to her being only a temporary distraction for them. As the song progresses, Dassin suggests that Lily's days of fleeting pleasure will eventually catch up with her as she grows old and recalls the nights she spent with soldiers. In the end, Lily is left reminiscing about her past, and the chorus reminds listeners that the passage of time cannot be stopped.
Overall, the lyrics of C'est La Vie Lily offer a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of youth and beauty. It serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of living a life without any regard for the future. The use of repetition in the refrain and the imagery of time's relentless march create a somber mood, which adds a layer of profundity to the song.
