Dassin was born in New York City to Jules Dassin (Yiddish actor and film noir director) and Béatrice Launer. He began his childhood first in New York and Los Angeles, California. However after his father became a victim of the anti-communist policies of Senator Joseph McCarthy, he and his family moved from place to place across Europe.
After studying at Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland, Dassin moved back to the United States to go to college at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan after doing very well on his bachelor's exam. After college, he moved back again to France where, while working at a radio station, a record label convinced him to begin to record his songs.
By the early 1970s, Dassin's songs topped the charts in France and he became well known. Probably as a recognition of his parents' left leanings, Dassin's records were officially released in the USSR. However, the political views of his parents were not well known to the general public in the USSR, and Dassin's popularity in the USSR should be connected to his talent only. He was also a talented polyglot, recording songs in German, Spanish, Italian and Greek, as well as French and English.
He died of a heart attack during a vacation to Tahiti on August 20, 1980. He is buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California.

The song "Les Champs-Elysées" by Joe Dassin tells the story of a man who is walking down the famous Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris. As he walks, he feels open and vulnerable, and he wishes to say hello to anyone he meets. And then he meets someone special, and suddenly he can talk to them and connect with them. The chorus repeats over and over that on the Champs-Élysées, you can find everything you want, from sunshine to rain, from morning to night. The second verse tells the story of the man meeting the person he encountered earlier and joining them to go down to a subterranean space where musicians play their guitars and sing all night. They sing and dance together until the morning, and even though they didn't kiss, their connection is strong.
The final verse tells the story of two strangers who met the night before and are now walking together down the Champs-Élysées, dizzy and in love. The power of music is so strong that an entire orchestra is playing as they walk. The song is uplifting and speaks of the power of connection, music, and love. The Champs-Élysées is a symbol of all the joys that life has to offer, where one can find anything they want, even love.

It's about enjoying the beauty of life in a simple and random way, basicaly.
You also have saint germain des près vibes in it. Hemingway, Miles Davis etc ... with a very Jazzy (and so US) atmosphere.
Dassin as you said was a perfect mix of americano/french culture. He was realy smart and a great artist. Gone too soon. :/
Many of his songs just celebrate life and love. But with some sharp (cultural) parts now and then. But mostly popular. He loved laughters, friends, women, food, art, deep thougths ... simple life in fact. As said in that song. That's also what most french enjoy in life. He was perfectly integrated, and a huge star in France back in the days. His death was ... quite traumatic for a lot of people. Like loosing a friend. A man that only had love to give. His lost was so unfair ... :/ Some of his friends still cry him today, and did not get over it.
I think even if you don't speak french you can feel his smile when he's singing.

To be fully honest, nice intention from the brotherhood, but it was awfull evil french singing indead. ^^
I was like " Wow after that massacer i need to hear the orignal, and quick" ^^
Cool effort anyway. And prefect song to create a contrast between the joy of the brain, fully "alive" again and what hapens to the doom patrol.
The whole season had some french vibes.
I suggest you to hear.
Et si tu n'existais pas.
A toi.
L'été indien.
And his darkest song.
Marie Jeanne.
Incredible song if you understand the text. A unique master piece.
