I Loves You Porgy
Joe Henderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to stay here
But I ain't worthy
You are to descent to understand
For when I see him
He hypnotizes me
When he takes hold of me
With his hard hand
Someday, I know he's comin' back
To call me
He's gonna handle me and hold me so
It's gonna be like dyin', Porgy
Deep inside me,
But when he calls I have to go

I love you Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
If I can stay here, and you would keep me

I love you Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me, I wants to stay here

With you forever and I'd be glad
I love you Porgy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Joe Henderson's "I Loves You Porgy" are a declaration of love from Bess, the lead female character, to Porgy, the male lead. She confesses that she is not deserving of his love because of her past, as she is easily swayed by her former lover's hold on her. Bess is vulnerable to his hypnotic power and fears she will never be able to resist him. Nevertheless, she longs to stay with Porgy, who is given to her deep devotion and protection. She declares her love for him earnestly and begs him not to let her old lover take her from him.

The lyrics are not just about love, but also about the deep emotional and psychological struggles one may face when trying to break free from past traumas. Bess is torn between the love and safety that Porgy offers her and the pull of her former lover. The lyrics showcase a desire for security and stability in life, which can only be found in the loving arms of someone who understands you and cherishes you.

Hard to imagine that a man like Joe, who had emphysema, could perform so well on an instrument requiring good breathing to play.

Maybe playing saxophone from early years strengthened his breath. Maybe was the thing that gave him resistance to breathing issues. Perhaps extended his life

@VAL 57 Indeed, he died of it a little over two years from this concert. More amazing is that he had the wind to play after - as reported in many places - being a chain smoker for many years. He left quite a legacy and sounded great in so many settings - as this duet with acoustic guitar shows!
