Georgia On My Mind
Joe Pass Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I laughed when I heard you saying
That I'd be playing solitaire
Uneasy in my easy chair
It never entered my mind

And once you told me I was mistaken
That I'd awaken with the sun
And ordered orange juice for one
It never entered my mind
You had what I lack, myself
Now I even have to scratch my back myself

Once you warned me that if you scorned me
I'd say a lonely prayer again
And wish that you were there again
To get into my hair again
It never entered my mind

Once you warned me that if you scorned me
I'd say a lonely prayer again
And wish that you were there again

To get into my hair again
It never entered my mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Joe Pass's song "Georgia On My Mind" describe a relationship between two people. The first verse speaks to the singer's contentment with being alone, and how they never even considered feeling lonely until their partner pointed it out to them. The next verse shifts to the partner's warning about the possibility of being rejected and how it would lead to longing for the person once again, despite any negative aspects of the relationship. The final lines, "Now I even have to scratch my back myself" demonstrate the sense of loss that comes with ending a relationship and not having that support anymore.

Overall, the song seems to be about the singer's realization of what they had in their partner after losing them. While they enjoyed their independence and at times even discounted their partner's contributions, once they were gone, the singer realized how much they relied on them. This could be interpreted as a commentary on the idea of taking people for granted and not fully appreciating them until they are no longer there.

Yes he is one the greats and his entire ouvre will have to be reevaluated one day. Wes
Montgomery and Joe Pass are the greatest. Herb Ellis maybe just a little step below.

Lets give due where it belongs. It was written in the 1930s by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics). And everybody from Carmichael, Mildred Bailey, Louie Armstrong in the 30s then Bill Hooliday, Jo Safford, and 50 others recorded it long before Charles. Ray Charles covered it, he didn't compose it.

Jack Frost
