It was Norman Granz, the iconic producer of Jazz at the Philharmonic and the founder of Verve Records, who, upon hearing Pass in 1970, immediately recognised the "new talent" and signed him to Granz's new Pablo Records label (named for Granz's friend Pablo Picasso).
In 1974, Pass released his landmark solo album "Virtuoso" on Pablo Records. Also in 1974, Pablo Records released the album "The Trio" featuring Pass, Oscar Peterson, and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. "The Trio" won a Grammy award for best jazz performance. As part of the Pablo Records "stable," Pass also recorded with Benny Carter, Robert Conti, Milt Jackson, Herb Ellis, Zoot Sims, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan and others.
Pass is known for his brilliant chord melody work where he simultaneously plays walking bass and chord melodies.
That Old Feeling
Joe Pass Lyrics

Last night my heart was so gay
Last night I found myself dancing
In my favorite cabaret
You were completely forgotten
Just an affair of the past
Then suddenly something happened to me
And I found my heart beating, oh, so fast
I saw you last night and got that old feeling
When you came in sight I got that old feeling
The moment that you danced by I felt a thrill
And when you caught my eye my heart stood still
Once again I seemed to feel that old yearning
And I knew the spark of love was still burning
There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start
For that old feeling, is still in my heart
I saw you last night and got that old feeling
When you came in sight I got that old feeling
The moment that you danced by I felt a thrill
And when you caught my eye my heart stood still
Once again I seemed to feel that old yearning
And I knew the spark of love was still burning
There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start
For that old feeling, is still in my heart
"That Old Feeling" by Joe Pass is a classic love song that depicts the cyclical nature of love and heartbreak. It begins with the singer describing how they were happy and carefree, dancing in a cabaret and seemingly over their past love affair. However, when they see their former flame, they realize that the old feeling of love and yearning has returned and is still burning within them. This realization leads them to believe that there can be no new romance for them as their heart still belongs to their past love.
The song delves into the human experience of being unable to move on from a past relationship and the emotional turmoil that comes with it. The lyrics describe the physical and emotional sensations that the singer experiences when they see their former flame, including their heart beating faster and standing still at the same time. It also touches upon the idea that despite trying to forget someone, they can still hold a place in your heart and influence your future romantic endeavors.
In summary, "That Old Feeling" is a wistful and poignant love song that explores the themes of love, heartbreak, and the inability to move on from the past.
