Street Life
Joe Sample Randy Crawford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I still hang around neither lost nor found
Hear the lonely sound of music in the night
Nights are always bright
That's all that's left for me, yeah
I play the street life
Because there's no place I can go
Street life, it's the only way I know
Street life
And there's a thousand cards to play
Until you play your life away
You dress and walk and talk
You're who you think you are
Street life, you can run away from time
Street life, for a nickel, for a dime
Street life, but you better not get old
Or you're gonna feel the cold
There's always love for sale
A grown up fairy tale
Prince charming always smiles
Behind a silver spoon
And if you keep t young
Your song is always sung

Your love will pay your way beneath the silver moon
Street life, street life, street life, oh street life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song 'Street Life' by Joe Sample, Randy Crawford, and Will Jennings describe the life of a person who has no place to go and finds solace in the city's street life. The person is neither lost nor found and hears the lonely sound of music in the night. The music makes the nights always bright, and that is all that's left for the person. The only way the person knows how to live life is through the street life. The street life offers a thousand cards to play, but one must be careful not to play their life away. Dressing, walking, and talking like oneself is an essential part of the street life, and it makes the person who they want to be.

The street life offers an escape from time, but it comes at a cost. For a nickel, for a dime, you can be part of the street life, but you must not get old, or you're gonna feel the cold. There's always love for sale, a grown-up fairy tale. Prince charming always smiles behind a silver spoon. If you keep it young, your song is always sung. Your love will pay your way beneath the silver moon. Overall, the lyrics describe the street life as a way of survival for a person who can't seem to find a place in the world.

Listen to this stripped down version. It is absolute perfection. That voice. This keys. This song is still beautiful. Even in 2022. Timeless classic.

@RealmoftheBlackShadow

Stripped down is the essence?

2024 Still enjoying Randy Crawford and Joe sample . The first time I heard that voice, I was hooked. Personally, I have always preferred male vocalists. Randy Crawford, Anita Baker, Roberta Flack, and the young Chaka Khan of course Aretha, Dionne and Whitney. That’s it. But Randy Crawford is at the top of that female list. She is an underrated super talented lady.

Damn her voice is just exactly the same. Usually when people get older their voice goes. Jesus she sounds amazing.
