When I first listened to the music of Joe Satriani, it was the self-titled album. I was a metal-head and into heavier music. I thought his music sucked and he was over-rated. I couldn't continue listening to that tape! Then I got the extremist album (which is released earlier!) and thought to give Joe another chance! and that was it. To this dayI listened to every single track and watched almost all live concerts by Joe ever since. It is almost impossible to me to spend a week without listening at least for a few hours to Satch albums. I consider The extremist album to be the definition and an encyclopedia of the style of Joe Satriani. War, The extremist, New blues, Motorcycle driver, Tears in the rain.... All masterpieces. I am thankful this reality included the music of Joe Satriani.

the self titled is one of my favorites though; laid back non pretentious blues; I went through my metal-head period in secondary school, but over time most of it ended boring me; still love tool, for example; but most metal is not "hard", just fast; there are a lot of harder bands with more rebellious attitudes in rock. It also doesn't help that during the 90's metal became very geeky. Still, Satriani is the only one of the virtuosos who doesn't sound like they're overcompensating for not being cool enough at school; I like most of his albums.

It might have sucked also for you when you first listened to Satch that although his music was not as hard or as loud as the others, he's technically 100X better than your so-called Metal guItarists at that time LOL!
prog
Satch educated you.
