In the mid-1970s, Venuti performed and recorded, again in the limelight: good examples of his latter-day recordings are the Chiaroscuro CD's Joe Venuti and Zoot Sims (CR(D) 142) and Joe & Zoot & More (CR(D)126). He died in Seattle, Washington.
Venuti was also a legendary practical joker.
There's A Small Hotel

Somewhere alone with you
It could be oh, so gay, Junior
You need a laugh
Or two
A certain place I know, Frankie
Where funny people can have fun
Darling
Before you can count up
One, two, three.
For there's a small hotel
With a wishing well
I wish that we were there together
There's a bridal suite
One room bright and neat
Complete for us to
Share together
Looking through the window
You can see a distant steeple
Not a sign of people who
Wants people?
When the steeple bell says,
"Good night, sleep well,"
We'll thank the small hotel
Together
We'll creep into our little shell
And we will thank the small hotel together
The lyrics of Joe Venuti's song "There's A Small Hotel" depict a desire to escape to a place of peace and contentment. The singer of the song, most likely a romantic duo or couple, is seeking a place where they can be alone together and unwind by having a few laughs. They finally find solace in a small hotel where they can create new memories and rekindle the passion that brought them together in the first place.
The song begins with the singer suggesting that they go somewhere away from all the daily hassle, where they can have a good time and laugh together. The mention of Junior and Frankie implies that the singer knows these people and is perhaps addressing them directly. They then talk about a place where funny people gather to have fun, which suggests a more upbeat atmosphere that complements their intentions. The singer then talks about a "small hotel" that has all the amenities they could ever need, particularly a "wishing well" that implies that this is a place where dreams come true. The song concludes with the singer looking out the window and admiring the scenic view of a distant steeple before the chimes signal the time to retire for the night.
