Eddie Lang (October 25, 1902 – March 26, 1933) was an American jazz guitarist, regarded by some as the Father of Jazz Guitar.

Giuseppe "Joe" Venuti, considered the father of jazz violin, pioneered the use of string instruments in jazz along with the guitarist Eddie Lang, a childhood friend of his. Through the 1920s and early 1930s, Venuti and Lang made many recordings, as leader and as featured soloists. He and Lang became so well known for their 'hot' violin and guitar solos that on many commercial dance recordings they were hired to do 12- or 24-bar duos towards the end of otherwise stock dance arrangements. In 1926, Venuti and Lang started recording for the OKeh label as a duet (after a solitary duet issued on Columbia), followed by "Blue Four" combinations, which are considered milestone jazz recordings. Venuti also recorded a number of larger, more commercial dance records for OKeh under the name "New Yorkers".

Eddie Lang was born Salvatore Massaro, the son of an Italian-American instrument maker in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At first, he took violin lessons for 11 years. In school he became friends with Joe Venuti, with whom he would work for much of his career. He was playing professionally by about 1918, playing violin, banjo, and guitar. He worked with various bands in the USA's north-east, worked in London (late 1924 to early 1925), then settled in New York City.
He played a Gibson L-4 and L-5 guitar, providing great influence for many guitarists, including Django Reinhardt.

What a time it was for music lovers in those times. You had Venuti playing jazz and Heifetz playing classical. I haven't been listening to jazz violinists for very long, but I am amazed at Venuti's ability, it's very obvious that he studied classical violin at an early age, lovely sound, very polished. I would call him the Heifetz of the jazz violin.

My cousin trained under Joe and has Joe's fiddle. Amazing how, on Pandora, I can pick out Joe or my cousin by the timber of the instrument. Venuti is an amazing musician. So happy to hear him. Wonderful musician. Thank you for posting this.

Venuti really sounds amazing. What would you think who is "better" (even though thats a very unspecified criteria): Venuti or Stephane Grappelli?

Simon Klages First of all, we need to add another fiddle player to the mix. Eddie South was a black violinist who was contemporary with the other two. He was very fine. I have numerous of his recordings on my channel. All three players have strengths and weaknesses. Joe Venuti was the best violinist and was the first jazz fiddle player with a classical tone. His weakness compared to Grappelli was that Eddie Lang, as good as he was, was nowhere near Django Reinhardt. Otherwise his tone, intonation, articulation, and phrasing was the best of the three. He was classically trained. Grappelli was classically trained on the piano but mostly self taught on the violin. He was the first of the three that I heard, many years ago. He is the only one I've seen in person in the middle 1970s. I have imitated some of his intros and licks when I played in a band that did mostly 1930s jazz. He plays wonderfully but not quite on the same level as either Venuti or South but, of course, he had Reinhardt when h started out. If you read about Eddie South it will say that because he was black he was not allowed a career as a classical violinist. This is BS. He was not nearly good enough to compete with classical violinists of his time. I love the album I have of his. I've only heard him play on one other album and it sounds like a different player altogether, really horrible. Don't know what the problem is.

All three players are a joy to listen to. Venuti is the best violinist. He played in small bands and led larger ensembles, played with many other artists, and went on to have a long career. Grappelli also had a long career and played with many different people in different styles. If you can find it, there is a very entertaining documentary film about Grappelli. In the film he talks mostly about his early career. I found it on Netflix DVDs. Eddie South disappeared off the scene. South recorded at least one tune with Reinhardt alone and several with both Reinhardt and Grappelli. I have uploaded a most of those and there's at least one other on YT, Fiddleditty, the longer version. Check them out.

Sorry I have no definitive answer. We're lucky to have all three available to hear. I hope this reply is satisfactory. Thanks for listening.

+2ndviolinist Sorry for responding so late to your great post. I absolutely dig getting information about great musicians by experts in the specific field. I definetely will check out Eddie South, whom I didn't hear of before, I think. I have seen the Grappelli film - one of the best music documentaries I've watched so far. One thing about Eddie Lang: Though for sure he isn't as virtuosic as Django Reinhardt, I have to say that the way he interacts with and backups Venuti seems very sophisticated and charming to me. Same when he plays with Lonnie Johnson. That way of playing has its own special quality too, in my estamation, while the Grappelli-Reinhardt recordings often seem a bit coarse to me (probably though mainly because of the typical gipsy guitar "plong plong" comping by the other players).

One last thing: Do you think it's a disadvantage for a jazz player to be not classical trained? Surely the violin is an instrument in particular associated with classical music and surely technically especially challenging - but when I look at the great jazz legends surely many of them didn't have much or any classical training and were primarily autodidacts. And even though they certainly couldn't compare with classical players in terms of mere technic, their playing was maybe so original BECAUSE they learned their craft in such an individual manner. What do you think?

I agree about Eddie Lang. He and Venuti formed a great pair and I do really enjoy his guitar playing. They have great chemistry. I heard a recording of Eddie playing a difficult classical piece and he did so quite well. Django Reinhardt is so amazing that he is still thought of as a guitar god by jazz guitarists. His imagination and harmonic variety is mind-boggling. The fact that he could play such incredible solos with only 2 fingers is amazing in itself. The chunk chunk of the Hot Club Quintet was Django's fault. He refused to have a drummer in the band and was appeased by having 2 rhythm guitars instead. It definitely detracts. Grappelli studied piano in a conservatory but stated he never took violin lessons.

If you want to check out a very popular jazz fiddler who was not classically trained, search for "Stuff Smith 1939-1944 (entire CD, 25 Tracks)" that I put up a while back. He is very effective and modeled his playing, according to him, after Louis Armstrong's playing. I guess it comes down to what you want to hear in jazz violin playing. I studied classical music from age 6. I never did the hard work it takes to be really good partly because I was good at and explored other academic areas unlike my brother who knew he wanted to be a violinist at a very young age. I also suffered from a lack of ambition and often was just plain lazy. He followed through going to Juilliard and playing in several good orchestras before winning a position in the Houston Symphony. Thus I have a hard time enjoying listening to jazz violinists who plays as roughly as Stuff Smith.

+2ndviolinist I would say there isn't a lot to choose between Venuti and Grappelli and I would have given my eye teeth to hear them together. For Eddie Lang's best work you need to listen to his partnership with Lonnie Johnson. It's also worth having a look at Stephane Grappelli with Julian Bream here on Youtube. JB was inspired by Django and it shows in his work.

I think Venuti emerged full grown by the mid 20s. A lot of Grapelli's early work is a little hesitant and unswinging. He learned. Later Grapelli is worthy of the comparison. And Eddie South needs to be remembered too!

Eddie did not die of blood loss. Some time after the operation he was described, in a note to the death certificate, as becoming cyanotic (ie blue colour due to hypoxia). His death followed shortly and may have been exacerbated by a pre-existing coronary or pulmonary condition. Either way a tragedy for him and for us all.

be' la prima notizia è che gli italoamericani non misero le basi di questo genere :) è musica afro americana - l'incontro fra tradizioni africane ed europee: il contributo principale lo diedero gli afroamericani, le prime band erano tutte afroamericane, solo successivamente il genere fu ripreso dalle altre comunità, fra le quali sicuramente quella italoamericana era abbondantemente rappresentata. Ovviamente la storia delle origini del jazz è complessa ed intricata, ma a grandi linee è andata così - ed è una storia straordinaria. Il primo disco di Jazz è stato inciso per un caso curioso da un gruppo piuttosto mediocre di musicisti che erano ai margini del genere: erano più vicini alla musica d'avanspettacolo e improvvisavano a mala pena. Negli stessi anni le orchestre afroamericane avevano uno stile diverso, più fluido, con maggiore improvvisazione. Provi a cercare la Creole Band di King Oliver, sentirà una grande differenza, oppure le poche registrazioni (più tarde, ma simili allo stile arcaico di New Orleans) di Freddie Keppard (che avrebbe potuto registrare il primo disco di jazz ma si rifiutò per paura di essere imitato) o le primissime di Jelly Roll Morton, che forse si trovano su youtube. Giusto per iniziare e avere un minimo di orientamento

I hate to quibble, but I've seen Vassar Clements 2 times. As a violinist and fiddler, I don't think there is any comparison. Vassar is very good but, 1st of all, Venuti was the 1st important jazz violinist and has impeccable technique. He also has a wide range of licks. Sorry to be negative. Thank you for listening.

Not so much on Django but for sure Stéphane . I watched a documentary about Grappelli where he talked quite a bit and others added information. He stated that Joe Venuti was a major influence. He heard him and I am sure met him when he was playing with the Paul Whiteman band in France.

+ 2ndviolinist ,the "cousin" that studied with Venuti is most likely Paul Anastasio, the superb swing and country fiddler, from Seattle WA. That was the early '70's, at the time P.A. was his only student. Sorry to hear that you can't play anymore. I was in the hospital recently and couldn't play for a while. I can play now, but it's back to the woodshed to get my chops to where they were (not in Joe's league, he's the best, alone at the top). one of my colleagues has a Nicolo Gagliano. He's retiring, I keep asking him if he wants to sell it. For my ear, one of the best violins I ever played. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the info. I listen to music much more than when playing. I loved my instrument and bow (nothing better than a Tourte) but had the chance to play for short bursts on numerous great instruments including Kreisler's del Gesu, the Bazzini del Gesu, the Ward Strad, and the ultimate, the Hellier Strad. As great as they are, my Gagliano never disappointed me. Hope you have big bucks to buy the Nicolo, it's a big step up from my fiddle. I like my Johannes better than the only Nicolo I played.

When I was playing violin, I made money playing classical but I played quite a bit of fiddle as well. I wish I had had the dedication to sound reasonably close to Venuti's playing. He was the 1st and best of the big 3 (Venuti, Grappelli, & South) who played really clean, violinistic jazz. Thank you for noticing the pictures. I like to give the listener something look at and sometimes I go overboard collecting them. Thank you for listening (and watching).

You are most welcome. You have a lucky cousin. What kind of violin? Just sold mine, a Johannes Gagliano ca. 1780. I was injured in 2000 and can't play. I played classical, string band, country, and jazz. I put up 3 tunes from a mostly '30s style jazz band recently. It is at watch?v=c7_uPTF7Ob4 (put in after the slash past the basic YouTube etc.). This was from 1 year before I had Gagliano. I wasn't nearly in Joe's league. BTW, many Venuti/Lang recordings are on YT.

You are welcome again. Venuti was the best violinist of the 3 greats – Venuti, Grappelli, and Eddie South. Venuti also was the 1st high quality chess player on the violin. Eddie Lang, though very good, was no Reinhardt. Eddy South has a magic all his own.

Thank you for introducing me to Michael Warlop. He is very good. Technically Venuti is by far the best (and 1st), jazz violinist. His style is very different from Grappelli, South, and Warlop. The last piece I downloaded of Warlop's has a bunch of octaves which are out of tune. Venuti is also from a slightly different time than the others.
