Up All Night
Joe Walsh Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well the sun came up and a new day dawned
Didn't make a bit of difference to me.
With the curtains drawn in the candlelight
I was up all night
Feelin' alright.
(Up all night, feelin' alright)
Cos the world goes round if its dark or light
It don't really matter.
But the clocks wind down
Anytime is right
Waking up all night
Feelin' alright.
(Up all night, feelin' alright)

And its been confirmed if you stay up late
It starts getting early.
But it takes as long as it does to write a song
And you dance all night
Its alright.
(Up all night) You'll be up all night.

I didn't need to be up all night
With the curtains drawn
In the candlelight
And the moonlight
Feelin' alright!
I was up all night
(Up all night)
I was up all night
Feelin' alright
(Up all night)
(Up all night)
(Up all night)

(Up all night)
(Up all night)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Joe Walsh's song Up All Night talk about the singer's experience of being awake all night long and feeling alright. The sun comes up, but it doesn't matter as the singer is content with being up all night. The fact that the clocks wind down doesn't affect the singer, and any time seems right to be up all night. The lyrics point out that staying up late will eventually make it early as the night ends, but it's alright as it takes as long as it does to write a song and dance all night.

The theme of the song seems to be embracing the night time and not being bothered about the passing of time. The lyrics suggest a carefree attitude towards life and enjoying the moment. The singer's mood indicates that being up all night makes him feel good, content, and satisfied. The reference to the curtains drawn, candlelight, and moonlight suggest that the singer is enjoying his time alone and relishing his own company. The song highlights the idea of living life to the fullest and not worrying about what others might think.

We get up early and we work all day
We put our time in 'cause we like to stay up
All night long
We keep on grinnin' till the weekend comes
Just a pinch between your cheek and gum
All night long, all night long
Start in the morning and get the job done
Take care of bus'ness and we have some fun
All night long, all night long
We like a long neck and a good old song
Turn it up and then we sing along
Sing along
We're all stayin' up all night long
All night long
All night long
All night long
All night long

Years ago my sister went to an outdoor eagles concert after the concert she was trying to carry a cooler to the camper party. A fellow asked her if he could help her. They each grabbed a beer from the cooler in one hand and a hand on the cooler handles. When they carried the cooler into the party people froze in shock the man helping her was Joe Walsh. He was an everyday Joe and partied with them.

You should hear some of the comments he has made on QFM96 in Columbus. The one about when he toured with Ozzie. All I have to say, is; Don't be driving.
