Funk #49
Joe Walsh & the James Gang Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Uh, sleep all day, out all night,
I know where you're going.
I don't that's a-acting right,
You don't think it's showing.
A-jumpin' up, fallin' down,
Don't misunderstand me.

You don't think that I know your plan,
What you try'n to hand me?
Out all night, sleep all day,
I know what you're doing.

If you're gonna a-act that way,
Think there's trouble brewing.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Joe Walsh & the James Gang's song Funk #49 are the vivid description of someone who knows what their partner is up to- living a life of sleepless nights and endless partying. The singer seems to be fed up with his significant other's behavior- jumping up and down, falling to the ground- and can't help but notice that their partner's lifestyle isn't right. The singer seems well aware of their partner's plan, but they don't seem too happy about it. While their partner is out all night and sleeps all day, the singer is left questioning whether there might be trouble brewing.

The song's lyrics seem to be a commentary on the party culture of the late 1960s/early 1970s. The song suggests the singer's partner is well on their way to a destructive lifestyle of endless partying, but the singer is left with the task of cleaning up the wreckage. The song's structure of repeating lines highlights the singer's frustration with their partner.

I am a 70 year African American but let it be said more American. I love this music, I play bass guitar and my band rocked our School dances with this music. This music is one of the many things that helped make America Great. Keep the music true. God Bless us all.

Released the year before I was born. Amazing percussion and just the right amount of guitar solo. Real musicianship. Love the timbre of the drumset...amazing!
