Out of the Blue
Joelistics feat. Kaity Dunstan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out of the blue it all changed in an instant
He was nineteen when she told him she was pregnant
Barely out of high school, living in a small town
Neither of 'em had a job or money in the bank
He got work on the factory floor
Struggling to make ends meet but she adored him
Always in his corner when her parents started on her like
"He won't ever amount to that much"
The baby arrived, really they tried
She said "let's do the best we can a day at a time"
He started staying out all night getting drunk
Convinced he couldn't deal with what he had, what he's done
He lost his job and that was no surprise
She said "I can't go on watching you destroy your life
You need to get it together or I'm leaving with our kid"
He said "It's probably best that you left", so she did

So when you gonna learn
It'll hit you hard
Even if it hurts
And it always does
So when you gonna learn
Let it in your heart
We come together and fall apart
Out of the blue my love

Five years later and she's living in the city
And she's severed all contact with her old life
Her little girl's at school, she was working days
Staying up late and studying through the night
Out of the blue he called up and they talked
He said he's got a job up north on fishing trawlers
He hadn't touched a drink for two years, he'd been clean
Plus he saved some money on the side inbetween
He cleared his throat, made an awkward joke
And asked "maybe I could come visit you both
But only if you think it's alright I mean"
She said she'd think about it, the next day she agreed

So when you gonna learn
It'll hit you hard
Even if it hurts
And it always does
So when you gonna learn
Let it in your heart
We come together and fall apart
Out of the blue my love

Out of the blue

Out of the blue
Out of the blue my love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Joelistics feat. Kaity Dunstan's song Out Of The Blue tell a story about a young couple who get pregnant while still in high school and are faced with the challenges of starting a family without money or jobs. The singer gets a job on a factory floor but starts to struggle with alcoholism and eventually loses his job. His partner tries to help him but he refuses to get his life together, leading to their separation. Five years later, the singer has cleaned up and calls his ex-partner to ask if he can visit and see their daughter. Despite initial hesitation, she agrees and the song ends on a note of hope and reconciliation.

The song's themes of love, loss, and redemption are universal and relatable to many listeners. The lyrics are written in a narrative style, almost like a short story, making the song easy to follow and engaging. The use of repetition in the chorus ("So when you gonna learn...") emphasizes the idea that we often repeat the same mistakes until we finally learn from them.

Yo yo

Again, what an awesome modern day story telling, poetical masterpiece from home grown Australian talent. I thought I'd share this info in case any of you hadn't stumbled across it already.

A few of months ago I discovered that the actors in this film clip are from an Australian made movie called Galore. Basically the target audience i'd suspect would be "young adult" or similar, however both the movie, Joe'ls track and the film clip all tie in seamlessly well with each other.
My guess is that, if you like this particular track, possibilities are that you'd enjoy the blend of all these story's, in each of their forms, being track, film clip and movie. Cant help but admire Joel's dedication not only to his band works with TZU, solo production/releases but also his well structured professional finish of film work that helps tie his unique Australian story telling tracks together. Having no doubt He utilizes the knowledge and resources of many other talented industry film and music experts via collaboration, You cant take away the amount of workload, passion and time that would and does go into these productions, usually at minimal artist funding's.

Check out the Aussie film "galore" starring the actors from this film clip. Although the story lines are a little different I couldn't
help but admire (probably being a slightly biased Australian) the quality and connection between all three of these works. and the familiarity found in the Aussie stories.

Many of our actors, musicians and artist will often put a lot more into their productions than they will ever get back. They all deserve a certain level of respect, let alone a few extra bucks in their pockets for their hard work, in what is not an easy industry in Australia to break into. Hope you enjoy. Peace, Stay Safe

I've had this song on my enormous phone playlist for a few years now. Last night the girlfriend and I spent about 30 minutes trying to find this track on youtube, going off a few pieces of lyric I kept humming to myself. I hope this powerful track gains the recognition it deserves. I consider it one of the deepest songs about the mistakes of youth, a boy becoming a man, of forgiveness, of love. Every time this track queues up while I'm on my commute, you've got this guy in his mid 30's, living in landlocked central USA, belting out lines about fishing trawlers and tearing up when they finally reunite at the end. And for the record, I had to google what a fishing trawler actually was after hearing this song. Please keep making music the way you do!
