Play the Song
Joey Rory Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's too country, too rock and roll
It's too happy, to sad, to short, or it's way too long
Yeah and it's too bad they don't just
Play the song, play the song
Turn it up loud so we all can sing along
And let the people decide if the music is right or it's wrong
Play the song, play the song
It's too Garth, too George Strait
Too right down the center, too left of the plate
The hook's too weak or the subject matter's way too strong
Yeah and it's too bad they don't just
Play the song, play the song
Turn it up loud so we all can sing along
And let the people decide if the music is right or it's wrong
Man it's a shame, instead of playing the game
Play the song, play the song
And it's too bad, if you ask me,
Our song's gotta be so darn P.C.
So damn P.C.
Play the song, play the song
Turn it up loud so we all can sing along
And let the people decide if the music is right or it's wrong
Man it's a shame, instead of playing the game
Play the song, play the song
Play the song, play the song
The song "Play The Song" by Joey + Rory is a commentary on the state of the music industry. The song talks about how music is judged, evaluated and categorized based on specific criteria such as genre, tempo, mood, and length by the people who play it or the people in the industry. The artists are given feedback on their music, which they don't like or agree with. They want to be able to play their music the way they want without having to worry about these labels.
The song expresses the frustration of the artists who are constantly told what to do or how to create their music. Instead, they want the music to speak for itself and the people to decide whether it's good or bad. The artists are tired of conforming to the industry standards and want to make music that they feel is authentic and genuine, without having to worry about fitting into a particular mold or genre.
Overall, the song is a significant reflection of how musicians feel about the music industry. It shows how they want the freedom to express themselves without being tied to constraints or specific criteria.

Something I like about them is that, not only are they bringing back the old-style country, but they really show their personalities in their music. They're easy to listen to, also.

I really wish radio would play Joey and Rory's music more. It's too bad that they're being punished for bringing country back to it's roots and not selling out to be commercialized and pop. Thank you Joey and Rory for being true!
@tlc2wice
I have met them and they are so nice. Rory was very sweet to my daughter who was a bit starstruck at meeting them. I agree the radio should play them more....unfortunately "real" country music doesn't get enough air time.
