Auld Lang Syne
John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp,
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu'd the gowans fine;
But we've wandered mony a weary fit
Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidled I' the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere,
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught

For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

(Christmas time is here)

Christmas time is here
Happiness and cheer
Fun for all that children call
Their favorite time of the year

Snowflakes in the air
Carols everywhere
Olden times and ancient rhymes
Of love and dreams to share

Sleigh bells in the air
Beauty everywhere
Yuletide by the fireside
And joyful memories there

Christmas time is here
We'll be drawing near
Oh, that we could always see
Such spirit through the year

Oh, that we could always see
Such spirit through the year

Overall Meaning

John Travolta's rendition of "Auld Lang Syne/Christmas Time Is Here" is a blend of two classic holiday songs. The first half of the song is a traditional New Year's Eve song, while the second half is centered around the holiday spirit of Christmas. The song begins with the question of whether old friendships are to be forgotten and left behind. The singer then proposes that old friends raise a glass in kindness to those memories. The phrase "auld lang syne" translates to "old times' sake" and is a reflection on cherished memories of times long gone.

The second half of the song celebrates the joy of Christmastime, with "happiness and cheer" filling the air. The lyrics emphasize the nostalgia of the season, with "olden times and ancient rhymes of love and dreams to share." The song's conclusion wishes that this spirit of Christmas and goodwill could last throughout the year.

In summary, John Travolta's version of "Auld Lang Syne/Christmas Time is Here" is a sweet combination of two songs with similar themes of nostalgia and goodwill.

It doesn't have to be New Year's for me to appreciate the beauty of this stunning piece and the clarity and precision of John's incredible voice. This is the way this song should be sung! Thank you for sharing so much of his music with the word, Lady Grey!

Phyllis Ramsey

A great old Scottish song by Bonney Bobby Burns. Great singing, John!

martin kroll

Such a wonderful straight and cristallclear sound of voice. Ever since I heard him first time here on Youtube performing the BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLiC ( which was actually the piece of music I wanted to listen to) I, for simple couriousity, decided to click on his Live-performing. It only took a COUPLE OF SECONDS to have a brandnew wish on my Bucketlist. One final day I might have a chance to be in the audience somewhere, to clap my hands personally to Mr. John McDermott. German and other philosophers still keep thinking how to get evidence of the Existence of any Holy Power, which in my religion is called THE LORD, and I go like in mind: Hey all You philosophers, are You deaf? Just listen to musicians like Mr.McDermott and You guys have You´re final evidence: HOW GREAT THOU ART. Nothing more to say.
