(1) John Coolidge Adams
(born February 15, 1947) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer with strong roots in minimalism. He learned the clarinet from his father and played in marching bands and community orchestras during his formative years. He began composing at the age of ten and heard his first orchestral pieces performed while still a teenager. The intellectual and artistic traditions of New England, especially the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Harvard University, helped shape him as an artist and thinker. After earning two degrees from Harvard University, he moved to Northern California in 1971 and has ever since lived in the San Francisco Bay area.

Adams taught for ten years at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music before becoming Composer in Residence with the San Francisco Symphony (1982-85) and the creator of the orchestra's highly successful and controversial “New and Unusual Music" series. Several of Adams’s landmark orchestral works were written for and premiered by the San Francisco Symphony, including Harmonium (1981), Grand Pianola Music (1982), Harmonielehre (1985) and El Dorado (1992).

His well-known operas include 'Nixon in China' (1987), which recounts Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China 1972, and 'Doctor Atomic' (2005), which covers Robert Oppenheimer, the Manhattan Project, and the building of the first atomic bomb.

This has been a very bizzare listening for me. This is a work i never knew exsisted by one of my favorite contemporary composers and there are mixed feelings. I found me self unable to get into the first 8 minutes of the piece as i felt the modal repetitions lacking. Im glad i kept listening though as the rest of the piece is fantastic. Especially the second section. Great upload. Thanks!
Edit: I just got to the last movement and ohhh goodness that jazzy groove is the Adams i live for!

I'm a huge Adams fan, but I'm puzzled by this performance. Obviously, Gidon Kremer is terrific as usual, and the LSO displays its incredible skills -- much needed here by the ferocious woodwind score. But Nagano seems to pay only sporadic attention to the dynamic markings. At times, there is little difference between mezzo forte and forte, and these must be the lightest fortissimos I've ever heard. That's great with the Chaconne, which is stunning, but I would have preferred a more literal reading of the score.

The Toccare got me into this work but then got sucked into the moody "oh-no-not-rampage-monster-again" first movement after about a year. It took longer to click with the second movement but when it did.......there was an immediate solidifying catalystic connection to the piece

Always the same with Adams for me... everything sounds great, masterfully orchestrated. But after about 7 minutes I just want to start screaming. Give us some moment of rest!!! So much going on, so many notes. Please.
Also, the beginning sounds like the "poignet" from Ma Mère l'oye by Ravel, but on steroids.

The first movement sounds like a high school symphonic orchestra (with guest violinist) got on stage without rehearsing anything and kinda just hoped for the best.

Hmm--aside from some pleasant textures early in the work (the ascending string triads)-I don't find this work enjoyable. The solo violin part (played by the very able Gidon Kremer) is mostly ungracious, awkward double-stops which, for the most part, don't seem to jibe harmonically with the accompaniment---guess the fabled "drummer" is a bit too distant for these ears! Also don't get the programmatic content. While admittedly not a fan, there is often an admirable sense of "fun" and musical logic in Adam's works which seem missing in the Violin Concerto.

I nearly like it but the grating dissonance gnaws away at my sensibilities! I want to like the harmonic repetition of the first movement, the ambient synths and orchestra of the 2nd but I can't quite bring myself to. The 3rd movement is light relief, energetic, fun - chuggs along with a rock music sensibility, but there's something oddly, hackneyed about its (post)modernity. Technically adept, eclectic, interesting but a rather distasteful blend of intellectual kitsch. OK some may love it, but I prefer much of Adams other work.

Am I the only one who likes the first movement better than the third? Yes, it's hard to grab where it's going, but that's exactly why I like it. The last movement is too obvious for me to wonder around.....The second movement is like a dream in high fever, calmly distorted, drowning into daylight....reminds me of a bit of L'ange by Patrick Bokanowski....very interesting piece.

@ttwiligh7 Hi! I don't hear Pachelbel's Canon but some Eno and Stockhausen! A bit of Harold Budd and the Cocteau Twins as well! |The 2nd movement is both evocative and suggestive with its synth/orchestral mixture of timbres.

John's music is always brilliant, intelligent, and boring as all get out.There are a lot of notes but not a lot of emotionally charged drama. It kind of reminds me of Pinocchio who wasn't a real boy and wanted to be. After hundreds of years of great melodies, music without that critical factor leaves one a little cold. This is music of the head but not the heart. John is a wonderful architect but not a magician.

Agghhhhh, the entire concerto just feels so unidiomatic. I really dislike it. At's as if the violin part is just unreasonably difficult just to be difficult. Not even to be showy and impressive, literally just to make the soloist work for it. A lot of parts feel like they could be reorchestrated without a violin just as effectively.
