What About Us?
John Barrowman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Guess we've been talking too long
We know what we need
Separately

You say the honeymoon's over
I don't wanna push
But what about us?
It's ringing in my head
It's not what you say
It's what you have said

So what about us? What about love?
What about saying that we'll never give up
Don't wanna blame you, we're in danger
So what about us?

Guess we've been trying too hard
We misunderstood what's good for us
I'm tired emotionally inside
Night after night, we fight till we cry

I don't know what's wrong or right
Is every word you say
What's really on your mind?

So what about us? What about love?
What about saying that we'll never give up
Don't wanna blame you, we're in danger
So what about us?

When we love, we lie
When we talk, we hide
Maybe I'm searching light

I'm worn out, confused
What are we to you?
What do we do when?
What do we do when?

What about us? What about love?
What about saying that we'll never give up
Don't wanna blame you but we're in danger

So what about us? What about love?
That's the one thing we never discuss
Don't wanna blame you but we're in danger
What about us?

Let's talk about us

Overall Meaning

The song "What About Us" by John Barrowman reflects the feelings of a person who is in a relationship that seems to be falling apart. The lyrics convey the idea that, even though the couple has been together for a while, they still do not seem to be on the same page about their relationship. The first line, "guess we've been talking too long," suggests that they have been discussing their issues for a while, but without any real progress being made. The singer recognizes that they both know what they need individually, but they have not found a way to make it work together.

The line "you say the honeymoon's over" reveals that one person in the relationship has made this statement, implying that the other person may not agree with them. The singer admits that they do not want to push too hard, but they cannot ignore the problems. The repetition of the phrase "what about us?" emphasizes the need to address their relationship.

The bridge of the song expresses the frustration and confusion felt by the singer. They are tired of the fights and the lies and are searching for clarity. The chorus repeats the question "what about us?" as a plea to the other person to consider the importance of their relationship.

As a fan of Torchwood I just have to say that I had no idea he could sing this well and that I almost broke into tears at the beginning because his eyes stared into my soul and I felt my breath leave me. Wow.

He truly does capture that look of a man who's lived for thousands of years and seen things and done things that haunt him for the rest of his life.

Might not be the flashiest music video, but the purity in his voice shined through the whole thing...plus, how do you not get hypnotized by those eyes? Absolutely gorgeous....*cough*. The song, I mean.
