MAIN THEME
John Barry (1933-2011) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From Russia with love, I fly to you
Much wiser since my goodbye to you
I've travelled the world to learn
I must return
From Russia with love

I've seen places, faces
And smile for a moment
But, oh, you haunted me so
Still, my tongue tied young bride
Would not let my love for you show
In case you'd say "No"

To Russia I flew but there and then
I suddenly knew you'd care again
My running around is through

I'd fly to you
From Russia with love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "From Russia with Love" by John Barry appear to be a love song that speaks of a man who is returning to Russia to be with his lover after having travelled the world alone. He acknowledges that he feels much wiser since his last goodbye to her and that he has learned many things from his travels. However, there is a clear sense of longing in his voice as he describes how haunted he has been by her since their separation. The man seems to have been afraid to express his love for his partner in the past, but now he is a changed man and he is openly declaring his love.

The lyrics are vivid and emotional, speaking to the heart of anyone with a lover they miss. The lyrics describe a man who has seen the world and found that there is no one for him quite like his lover in Russia. The tone of the piece is romantic, and the music emphasizes this, it's a dreamy and romantic orchestral piece that seems to reflect the range of emotions felt by the singer. The slow and tranquil pace of the music adds to the message of the lyrics, almost emphasizing the importance of taking things slowly when venturing onto unknown paths. Overall, the song communicates the yearning of two lovers who are apart, who realize that they cannot be happy unless they are together.

In the US this TV series
was syndicated at night
between the 7-8 PM
time slot... once a
week. I cannot remember much
about this detective
series but I do remember this John
Barry theme much
to the composers
credit . It seems they
were always trying
to combine known
stars as detectives
in European locals
( Robert Vaughn in
Protectors ... Gene
Barry in The Adventurer
...Moore & Curtis in
The Persuaders ) but
the plots were usually
weak & none of these
TV series lasted.

Beyond Bond, arguably Barry’s finest theme would be measured as being ‘The Persuaders’ and probably so - given that it’s a belter. However, this theme from ‘The Adventurer’ still chills my spine and has that atmospheric euro feel, like The Persuaders, marking it as very specific flavour, if that makes sense. There’s an OHMSS feel, with the pulsing electro bass carrying the beat. It’s a great theme. Where have all the truly atmospheric TV themes gone?? 😎

The theme tune is way better than the show, chivers down the spine its a great but haunting theme.
