Hallelujah
John Cale Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That David played, and it pleased the Lord.
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth.
The minor fall, the major lift.
The baffled king composing Hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.
Your faith was strong but you needed proof.
You saw her bathing on the roof.
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you.
She tied you to a kitchen chair.
She broke your throne, she cut your hair.
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.
Maybe I've been here before.
I know this room, I've walked this floor.
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch.
Love is not a victory march,
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.
There was a time you'd let me know
What's real and going on below.
But now you never show it to me, do you?
Remember when I moved in you?
The Holy Dove was moving too.
And every breath we drew was hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.
Maybe there's a God above.
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you.
It's not a cry you can hear at night.
It's not somebody who's seen the light.
It's a cold and its a broken hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelu...
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.
John Cale's "Hallelujah" is a spiritual and emotional masterpiece of a song that portrays the world-weary notion of a broken and imperfect hallelujah. The song starts by metaphorically referencing the Hebrew king David and his secret chord that he played and pleased the lord, thus indicating the quest of humans to find a deeper kind of music that carries meaning and expresses faith. The succeeding lines poke at the listener's sensitivity, asking if they like music, recognizing that human emotions and musical talents are, however, varied. Cale then notes the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, and the major lift, describing a hallelujah that comes out of bafflement and distress, a song whose composition came from a baffled king.
In the second verse, Cale narrates the story of Sampson and Delilah, pointing again to the listeners' knowledge of the story concerning the woman who caused Samson's downfall. Cale adds that love is a force beyond our control, and when it strikes, it hits hard. In the third verse, he references the famous Tower of Babel and the story behind it, and hints at the hopelessness of life, where love is a cold and broken hallelujah. He uses "marble arch" to reconvene the listener to history and the notion that love is not always a victory, but a stronger force that brings pain and brokenness.

Eu ouvi falar que havia um acorde secreto
Que Davi tocou e que agradou ao Senhor
Mas você não se importa com música, não é?
Ela vai assim
A quarta, a quinta
O menor cai, o mair sobe
O confuso rei compondo Aleluia
Aleluia
Aleluia
Aleluia
Aleluia
Sua fé era forte, mas você precisava provar
Você a viu tomando banho do telhado
Aleluia
Aleluia
Aleluia
Aleluia
Talvez haja um Deus lá em cima
E tudo o que aprendi do amor
Era com atirar em alguém que desarmou você
E não é um choro que você pode ouvir essa noite
Não é alguém que tenha visto a luz
É uma fria e partida Aleluia
Aleluia, Aleluia
Aleluia, Aleluia
Aleluia, Aleluia
Aleluia, Aleluia
