Jupiter Variation
John Coltrane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Searching in the sky one night, while looking for the moon
I viewed a mighty light approching in a zoom
Need was there to tell someone of my discovery
Fifteen seconds later, a light appeared in front of me
To my surprise, there stood a man with age and mystery
His name was Jupiter and came to visit me

The name is Jupiter, from the galaxy
I came to meet you, to make you free
Deliver to you a flower from
A distant planet, from where I come

Keep your eye on Jupiter, such beauty in the sky
We will wait for your return in the by and by
Keep your eye on Jupiter, memories we shall fulfill
Just to view a brighter day, and do a righteous will

Watching and considering my visual state of mind
The flower fragrance help reveal to me the sign
The sigh of love, I had confessed to live and really know
The sign of love which I had failed my fellowman to show

The name is Jupiter, from the galaxy
I came to meet you, to make you free
Deliver to you a flower from
A distant planet, from where I come

The name is Jupiter, from the galaxy
I came to meet you, to make you free
Deliver to you a flower from
A distant planet, from where I come

The name is Jupiter, from the galaxy
I came to meet you, to make you free

Deliver to you a flower from
A distant planet, from where I come

Overall Meaning

"Jupiter Variation" was written by John Coltrane in 1965 for the album "Om" and was his first recording with his full Hindu-inspired ensemble. The lyrics of the song tell a story of a man who sees a light in the sky and meets a being named Jupiter from another galaxy who presents him with a flower from a distant planet. The song emphasizes the importance of love and doing good for others.

The opening lines are simple yet captivating, describing the singer's experience of looking up at the sky and seeing a "mighty light approaching in a zoom." The urgency of the moment is conveyed by the phrase "need was there to tell someone of my discovery." The music in the opening bars is structured in a way to create a sense of anticipation and excitement, that is a hallmark of John Coltrane's music.

As the song progresses, we learn that the mysterious light is none other than the planet Jupiter, and that the singer has been visited by an enigmatic being from the planet who identifies himself as Jupiter. The visit from Jupiter has a profound effect on the singer, who is reminded of the importance of love and compassion for others - qualities that he may have neglected in his own life.

One can also sense traces of Coltrane's spirituality throughout the song, particularly in the emphasis on universal love and doing right by others. The repetition of the line "The name is Jupiter, from the galaxy/ I came to meet you, to make you free" is almost like a mantra, reminding the singer (and the listener) of their connection to something greater than themselves.

Overall, "Jupiter Variation" is a beautiful, thought-provoking song that explores themes of transcendence, interconnectedness, and the importance of love and compassion for all living beings.

John Coltrane invented extreme metal music. Take the sax down two octaves, play it on distorted guitar, take the swing out of the drums, deliver with a quantized feel = exactly what death metal sounds like. Really good death metal that is.
