In Vietnam I was ridiculed endlessly for listening to jazz like this and others of note during the 60's, you guys know them, Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker etc. but I found the music replaced some of the pieces of my soul that war stripped away on a daily basis. I probably owe my existence today from this genre of music.

I'm just beginning to discover jazz at the age of 56, and I love this stuff.
I also like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan.
How did I miss all this stuff when I was younger?
Better late than never.

Euan I am also in my 50's and only just discovered jazz. I have always considered it as background music in the past, but now listen to it every day. Maybe we are getting wiser with age?

@euanelliott3613

@@americanpatriots4868 Quite possibly.
I first heard Ella Fitzgerald in the late '70's singing a jazz solo for an audio cassette advert, and then George Benson a few years later singing his own guitar solos.
Just recently I've been looking for something different to hard rock/pop as I've played my record collection to death.
I love Pavarotti and Beethoven, but jazz has an atmosphere I particularly enjoy.
Thanks for writing, best wishes to you.

Same for me! 49 y.o. and into Jazz since this summer. M.Davis, J. Coltrane, Glenn Gould and Thelonius Monk are my favorite so far but my major discovery is Keith Jarrett. If you like the piano and if not already done, I advise you to listen to the Koln concert. Mind blowing!
