Why Was I Born?
John Coltrane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Spending these lonesome evenings
With nothing to do
But to live in dreams that I make up
All by myself

Dreaming that you're beside me
I picture the prettiest stories
Only to wake up
All by myself

What is the good of me by myself?

Why was I born
Why am I living
What do I get
What am I giving

Why do I want a thing
I daren't hope for
What can I hope for
I wish I knew

Why do I try
To draw you near me
Why do I do I cry
You never hear me

I'm a poor fool
But what can I do
Why was I born
To love you

I'm a poor fool
But what can I do

Why was I born
To love you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John Coltrane's song "Why Was I Born?" express a deep sense of loneliness and longing for connection. The singer spends their evenings alone, lost in their own thoughts and dreams. The central question posed by the song is "why was I born?" The singer is questioning their very existence and purpose, wondering why they are living and what they are giving to the world. The idea of unrequited love is also present, with the singer pondering why they try to draw the object of their affection near when they never seem to hear them.

Through these lyrics, Coltrane is exploring universal themes of loneliness, purpose, and love. The song can be interpreted as a commentary on the human condition, with all of us struggling to find our place and meaning in the world. At its heart, "Why Was I Born?" is a song about the human desire for connection and the pain that can come with feeling isolated and alone.

Such an immaculate sound of both the tenor sax and the guitar consonantly in tune with such feel. I can sit back with a little wine and just watch the sunset melt away into the night.

U were born to be the greatest saxophone player in the history of mankind. Thanks to Coltrane we have today such a greats as Chris Potter, we had Michael Brecker (unfortunatelly not here anymore) and many others who grew up and fed from his influence. Thanks John Coltrane

One person REALLY REALLY lost his/her mind! This rendition of "Why Was I Born?" is beyond perfection. Coltrane's tone is absolutely 'spot on', and Burrell's accompaniment is superb!!!!
