Calypso
John Denver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

To sail on a dream on a crystal clear ocean
To ride on the crest of a wild raging storm
To work in the service of life and the living
In search of the answers to the questions unknown
To be part of the movement, part of the growing
Part of beginning to understand

Aye, Calypso the places you've been to
The things that you've shown us
The stories you tell
Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you so long and so well

Like the dolphin who guides you, you bring us beside you
To light up the darkness and show us the way
For though we are strangers in your silent world
To live on the land we must learn from the sea
To be true as the tide and free as a wind swell
Joyful and loving in letting it be

Aye, Calypso the places you've been to
The things that you've shown us
The stories you tell
Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you so long and so well

Aye, Calypso the places you've been to
The things that you've shown us
The stories you tell

Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you so long and so well

Overall Meaning

"Calypso" is a song by John Denver that pays homage to the sea, nature, and our desire to explore and understand the unknown. The lyrics are written in an enchanting, moving, and thought-provoking way that captures the imagination of the listener.

The song speaks of a desire for adventure, to sail on a dream, to experience the unpredictability of the ocean, and find answers to questions that are unknown. The lyrics imply a sense of awe, wonderment, and respect for the vastness of the sea, the creatures that thrive in it, and the lessons that can be learned from it. The mention of Calypso, the Greek goddess who personified the sea, adds a mythical and spiritual dimension to the song.

The second part of the song talks about how Calypso becomes an inspiration for people to live a life that is true, untamed, and joyful. Like the dolphin that follows her, she guides people through darkness and shows them the way. The lyrics suggest that the sea has a profound impact on people's lives, that it can make them more loving and accepting of what life brings.

Overall, "Calypso" is a song that flows like the waves of the ocean, gentle and powerful at the same time. Its lyrics are an expression of how we as human beings are connected to nature and how it can enrich our lives in ways that we cannot imagine.

Hey J Parker, Sorry to hear you're having these issues. Would you mind please emailing our support team an example album or track to support [at] sonichits.com?

J Parker

SonicHits just gets worse and worse. Albums that don't play, songs that don't play, tracks that are NOT the named song or even the right artist, adverts that cover content and cause the site to interrupt and buffer inthe middle of songs. I've got to find a better music site!

I will never get tired of John Denver's perfect voice, we all lost a brilliant soul when he passed. Rest in peace John.

I read on how he died, I just start crying about and when I listen to Calypso. What this man had. But You know what! He is still here with all of us in spirt.

I always thought that John Denver had the voice of an Angel. Such a gorgeous song from a man with a gorgeous soul. My father was lucky enough to meet John Denver back in the 80s. Dad retired truck driver and he was the delivery man for the Pizza Huts across the country. John Denver owned a Pizza Hut or two in West Virginia and he happened to be at one of them invited my dad to have lunch with him. Dad said he couldn't have been any nicer treated my father like a king. In any case he was a gentlemen. My dad and I still talk about him till this day, and while I'm sad that John Denver is gone, I am glad that heaven has this angel in their choir.

Thanks for sharing this good memory! My Mom and I both enjoyed watching him on TV. A type of popular music we could both enjoy.
