Grandma
John Denver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was a little bitty boy just up off the floor
We used to go down to grandma's house every month end or so
We'd have chicken pie, country ham
Homemade butter on the bread
But the best darn thing about grandma's house
Was the great big feather bed

It was nine feet high and six feet wide
And soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick

It could hold eight kids and four hound dogs
And a piggy we stole from the shed
We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On grandma's feather bed

After supper we'd sit around the fire, the old folks'd spit and chew
Pa would talk about the farm and the war
And granny'd sing a ballad or two
And I'd sit and listen and watch the fire till the cobwebs filled my head
Next thing I'd know I'd wake up in the morning
In the middle of the old feather bed

It was nine feet high and six feet wide
And soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick

It could hold eight kids and four hound dogs
And a piggy we stole from the shed
We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On grandma's feather bed

Well, I love my ma and I love my pa, I love granny and grandpa too
I've been fishin' with my uncles, I wrestled my cousin
I even kissed Aunt Lou, ew!
But if I ever had to make a choice I guess it oughta be said
That I'd trade them all plus the gal down the road
For grandma's feather bed
I'd trade them all plus the gal down the road

It was nine feet high and six feet wide
And soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick

It could hold eight kids and four hound dogs
And a piggy we stole from the shed
We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On grandma's feather bed

We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On grandma's feather bed

SonicHits just gets worse and worse. Albums that don't play, songs that don't play, tracks that are NOT the named song or even the right artist, adverts that cover content and cause the site to interrupt and buffer inthe middle of songs. I've got to find a better music site!

In 1973, when I was a lad of 10, I was at Denver Children's Hospital, recovering from heart surgery, when a nurse came by and said John Denver had just dropped by to do an impromptu concert for the kids. She asked if I'd like to go, and despite never having heard of him (our house was Classical music only) I said yes. They got me into a wheelchair and my mom headed me for the elevator.
Just as we were getting in, a young man with moppy hair and a guitar jogged up and asked if we were headed for the playroom. My mom told him we were, so he rode up with us. He did a great little concert for about 25 of us kids and probably 50 nurses. It was the first time I'd ever heard this song and I loved it.
Denver didn't have to do that concert. There was no press there and I don't know if anyone who wasn't there even heard about it, but he was just that kind of guy. He wanted to brighten the day of some kids that were dealing with health issues, and he did. R.I.P. John.

John didn't play music just BC the press was there. He was the Most Genuine person l have ever seen. I swear if he'd been out on the road with only a dog for company, he would have played for the dog..lol

@karengilson3447

We saw him on the street in Boulder in the late 80's. He smiled and waved just like we were old friends.
