Help
John Farnham & Anthony Warlow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self-assured
Now I find I've changed my mind
I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me

And now my life has changed, in oh so many ways
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure
And I know that I just need you
Like I've never done before

Help me if you can I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Oh, help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me

(Sax solo)

When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now those days are gone, I'm not so self-assured
Now I find I've changed my mind
I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Oh, help me get my feet back on the ground

Won't you please, please help me
Won't you please, please, help me

Overall Meaning

The first verse of John Farnham's "Help" speaks about the confidence and independence that characterized his youth, where he felt that he never needed anybody's help in any way. However, as he grew older, he admits that he has changed his mind, indicating that he is not as self-assured as he used to be. He further explains that he has opened up the doors, which suggests that he has begun to accept help from others. In the chorus, he pleads with listeners to help him, indicating that he is feeling down and needs support to get his feet back on the ground.

In the second verse, Farnham reveals that his life has changed in many ways, and that his independence seems to have vanished in the haze, suggesting that he feels overwhelmed and unable to cope on his own at times. He explains that every now and then, he feels insecure, acknowledging that he needs help like never before. In the chorus, he repeats his plea for assistance, emphasizing the urgency of his situation.

Overall, "Help" is a song about vulnerability and the need for support from others. It speaks to the concept that everyone needs help and support at some point in their lives, and that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
