Have You Ever Seen The Rain?
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cuando veo salir el sol
Como el que ha salido hoy
Mi yo siente mucha alegría

When it's over, so they say
It'll rain a sunny day
I know, shinin' down like water
Ahora no, no ha llovido el día de hoy
Y ahora no, no hace frío ni calor
Óyeme
Hace buen tiempo, gracias al sol

Yesterday, and days before
Sun is cold and rain is hard
I know, been that way for all my time

Cuando hay sol, hay mucha flor
Y el verano es como yo
Y tu amor como la bugambilia

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
Y ahora no, no hace frío ni hace calor
Comin' down on a sunny day

Ahora no, no ha llovido el día de hoy

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
Hace buen tiempo, gracias al sol

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John Fogerty's song "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?" are a melancholic reflection on the unpredictable nature of life. The first verse, which is in Spanish, translates to "When I see the sun rise, like it did today, my inner self feels great joy." This suggests that the singer is excited about a new day and the possibilities that it brings. However, the rest of the song is a lament on the inevitable rainy days that follow the sunny ones. The chorus asks the question, "I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?" Perhaps implying that the singer feels alone in the struggle to find hope during difficult times.

The second verse reminisces about how the sun used to be "cold" and the rain "hard" and how this has been the case "for all my time." The third verse provides a contrast to the melancholic mood. The singer describes how the summer is full of flowers and life, and compares it to the vibrant love of the "bugambilia" plant. Finally, the song concludes with the repetition of the first verse, suggesting that despite everything, life is still worth celebrating.

Overall, the song can be interpreted as a reflection on the impermanence of life and the importance of finding joy in the present moment. It also emphasizes the importance of companionship and community in times of struggle.

@GunjanAayu

I saved this song in my playlist for my 5 month old daughter. I shed few tears, thinking my daughter will remember me through this song after reading comments from young people being reminded about their loved ones through this song.

I'm 72 now also. This is STILL one of my all-time favorite songs. The organ coming in during the last 1/2 of the song (on the original recording, not in this performance) adds a lot to the feel of the song. Couldn't be better.
