Nobody's Here Anymore
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He got the latest software
He got the latest hardware too
He got the latest gizmo
Up in his room
He's feeling so connected
But he don't talk to a soul
He got a stash of Twinkies
Up in his room

[Chorus:]
Nobody here anymore
Nobody mindin' the store
They've all gone
To another dimension
Nobody here anymore

She comin' 'round the corner
Ah in a SUV
She got the latest cell phone
Up in her ear
I'm running 'gainst the traffic
But she don't see me
One hand on the cell phone
One hand on the mirror

[Chorus]

He's sittin' back at the classroom
A million miles away
He's listenin' to the rock star on a CD
Up front the old teacher
She's too tired to snag his mind
He's lookin' at the future, she's looking way behind

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in John Fogerty's song Nobody's Here Anymore highlight the dangers of technology and the impact it has on human connection. The first verse describes a person who is isolated in their room with all the latest technology gadgets but has no one to talk to, no human interaction. The stash of Twinkies is a symbol of an unhealthy and solitary lifestyle. The chorus emphasizes the emptiness the singer feels. Nobody is "mindin' the store” because people are consumed by technology and disconnected from each other. They've all gone to another dimension or reality, so the person feels alone, disconnected, and abandoned.

The second verse tells the story of a careless driver who is too engrossed in her latest cell phone to notice anything else. The cell phone is again a symbol of the disconnection in human relationships. The singer runs against traffic, but the woman on the phone does not see him. Instead, she focuses only on the technology in her hands. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the loneliness and isolation from humans caused by technology.

The third verse describes a student who is more interested in listening to a rock star in a CD than the teacher in class. The teacher represents traditional forms of learning and human interaction, but the student looks way beyond that towards the future that technology can bring.

Great, great song - It should have been a huge hit single!
And it's all SO very true... Just watch all those clueless people walking around aimlessly hoping that someone - anyone will reply to their silly and more often than not, underdeveloped thoughts.
Technology types usually haven't got much going on in their own heads, so devices fill those voids... Sad really, but this is our world now.

Wow, why haven't I heard this before? Caught on radio recently and it knocked me out. Thought it was recent, but no, Fogerty expressed profoundly in lyrics was was happening at the time when he wrote/recorded it, and its still not only SO true now, but even moreso, with Facebook, Twittering, everyone on their smart phones. Fogerty may not speak for the ages, but he sure as hell speaks for our time.

We cannot say enough good things about John, he is just a prodigy.

Yep. Same goes for Mark Knopfler.

When I heard this recently on radio recently it floored me, it is SO good, and I was sure it was Mark Knopfler, since the guitar sounded so much like Dire Straits. So I was surprised when I found this, and that it's Fogerty and band.
But thanks to Zootman2020 and BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose, below, I now know why it sounds like Dire Straits, it's because it IS Knopfler on lead guitar. Thanks you guys.
