Travelin' Band
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seven thirty seven comin' out of the sky.
Oh! Won't you take me down to Memphis
On a midnight ride,
I want to move.

(Chorus)
Playin' in a travelin' band, yeah!
Well, I'm flyin' 'cross the land,
Try'in' to get a hand,
Playin' in a travelin' band.

Take me to the hotel,
Baggage gone, oh, well.
Come on, come on,
Won't you get me to my room,
I want to move.

(Chorus)

Listen to the radio,
Talkin' 'bout the last show.
Someone got excited,
Had to call the State Militia,
Want to move.

(Chorus)

Oh! WOW!

Here we come again on a Saturday night
Oh with your fussin' and a fightin'
Won't you get me to the rhyme,
I want to move.

(Chorus)

Oh!
Worw!

Oh! I'm playin' in a travelin' band
Playin' in a travelin' band.
Won't you get me, take me hand
Well, I'm playin' in a travelin' band,
Well, I'm flyin' 'cross the land.
Tryin' to get a hand,
Playin' in a travelin' band, oh!
Wow!

Hey!

Overall Meaning

John Fogerty's "Travelin' Band" is about the life of a traveling musician, particularly the excitement and chaos of the lifestyle. The opening lines of the song start with a reference to a plane, possibly a Boeing 737 aircraft, flying in the sky and journeying to Memphis for a midnight performance. This sets the tone for the rest of the song, which is all about moving and playing music.

Fogerty seems to romanticize the itinerant musicians' life throughout the song, emphasizing the fun and exhilaration of traveling from place to place and playing music for different audiences. He describes their shows as a "midnight ride," and talks about getting caught up in the excitement, in the third verse. Even the radio DJs talk about their last show, as if they're the center of attention or the stars that everyone is clamoring to see.

The chorus of the song, which repeats the phrase, "Playin' in a travelin' band," serves to underscore this sense of excitement and motion, with Fogerty's vocals rising to a fevered pitch by the end of the song. It's as if the band is in a state of perpetual motion, always moving, always playing, always looking for the next gig.

Overall, "Travelin' Band" presents a lively and upbeat picture of what it means to be a traveling musician, with all the highs and lows that come along with it. It's a tribute to the hard work and dedication it takes to keep a band together and constantly on the move, and to the love of music and the thrill of performing that motivates those who do it.
