Endlessly
John Foxx Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When she walks out she's illuminous
When she turns 'round she is someone else
And I can't fight
Can't find the rule or the exception

She moves towards me endlessly
Endlessly...
Endlessly...

Turns her face into music...
Into fog...
Voice behind me
Says "go on"
So I go on towards her endlessly
Endlessly...
Endlessly...

Switch the scene
Sun is rising
Summer trees
Someone smiling
She moves towards me endlessly
Endlessly...
Endlessly...

She walks out she's illuminous

Overall Meaning

John Foxx's song Endlessly is a beautiful piece of music that seems rather veiled in ambiguity at first listen. The pain and the longing that seems to be emanating from the lyrics is palpable, and it evokes a sense of profound sadness in the listener. The opening lines, "When she walks out she's illuminous, when she turns 'round she is someone else," refer to the sense of mystique that surrounds the subject of the song. The singer is trying to understand the woman in question, attempting to grapple with her subtle nuances and complexities.

Throughout the song, the lyrics suggest a sense of indecision and a lack of clarity. The singer is confused, and he cannot seem to decipher his own emotions as much as he cannot understand the woman he is singing about. Furthermore, the line "And I can't fight, can't find the rule or the exception" highlights the singer's confusion, implying that he is struggling to come to terms with his own feelings, and that he is conflicted about how to act in the situation.

As the song progresses, the subject's mystery deepens even further. Foxx talks about the woman's "voice behind me", which seems to be urging him to "go on" towards her "endlessly". The song continues with a sense of yearning and desire, and the subject remains an enigma throughout, with the song's meaning remaining somewhat elusive.

My favourite John Foxx song - both this version and the more eastern version from 1982. I still have them both on 7 inch single.

This video is adorable but confusing. The girl (so well dressed) meets John and almost inmediately gets angry with him. Why does she get angry with John? He is adorable, handsome and magical, i could not get angry with John, and i'm someone very angry. Then John chases her from the park to the inside that strange building (the park and lonely building are ideas very Foxx) and at the end they are together as if nothing had happened. Was all that building a dream of John while waiting for his girlfriend? Sorry for my english.

@Ray Ixon I too. I love his music. And i love John.
