GMF
John Grant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You could probably say I'm difficult
I probably talk too much
I over-analyze and over-think things
Yes it's a nasty crutch

I'm usually only waiting for you to stop talking
So that I can
Concerning two-way streets I have to say
That I am not a fan

But I am the greatest motherfucker
That you're ever gonna meet
From the top of my head
Down to the tips of the toes on my feet
So go ahead and love me while it's still a crime
And don't forget you could be laughing
Sixty five percent more of the time
You could be laughing
Sixty five percent more of the time

Half of the time I think I'm in some movie
I play the underdog of course
I wonder who'll they'll get to play me, maybe
They could dig up Richard Burton's corpse

I am not who you think I am
I am quite angry which I barely can conceal
You think I hate myself, it's you I hate
Because you have the nerve to make me feel

But I am the greatest motherfucker
That you're ever gonna meet
From the top of my head
Down to the tips of the toes on my feet
So go ahead and love me while it's still a crime
And don't forget you could be laughing
Sixty five percent more of the time
You could be laughing
Sixty five percent more of the time

I should've practiced my scales
I should not be attracted to males
But you said that I should learn to love myself
Well, make up your mind, Dr. Frankenstein

I am the greatest motherfucker
That you're ever gonna meet
From the top of my head
Down to the tips of the toes on my feet
So go ahead and love me while it's still a crime
And don't forget you could be laughing
Sixty five percent more of the time
You could be laughing
Sixty five percent more of the time

'Cause I am the greatest motherfucker
That you're ever gonna meet
From the top of my head
Down to the tips of the toes on my feet
So go ahead and love me while it's still a crime
And don't forget you could be laughing
Sixty five percent more of the time
You could be laughing
Sixty three percent more of the time

You could be laughing
Twenty five percent more of the time

Overall Meaning

The song "GMF" by John Grant feat Sinéad O'Connor is a self-deprecatory yet endearing ode to one's flaws and quirks which people criticize and judge harshly. The lyrics is about being overly self-critical, obsessed with analyzing everything, and finding faults in everyone, including oneself. The song begins with the admission of being 'difficult,' talkative, and overthinking things. The singer mentions his/her 'nasty crutch' and waiting for others to stop talking. The singer reveals his/her disdain for two-way streets, implying that relationships and communication is not her/his strongest suit. However, the singer is convinced of their own greatness despite their numerous flaws and negative thinking, and they invite others to embrace their quirks and magnificence. The song also refers to the societal pressure for conformity and the pain of feeling like an outsider.

The song is a mix of both emotional vulnerability and unbridled confidence, and the lyrics can be interpreted as a plea for acceptance and understanding. The chorus ("But I am the greatest motherfucker/ That you're ever gonna meet / From the top of my head/ Down to the tips of the toes on my feet") signifies the singer assures himself or herself of their greatness while acknowledging their side of being difficult. Toward the end of the song, the singer is sarcastic about the society's expectation, saying that they should have practiced their musical scales and not be attracted to males. The singer questions the therapist's advice of learning to love oneself and questions the societal requirement for conformity.

I cry every time I hear this song. It was a favourite of my very much loved complex son. He was very intelligent but found it very hard to fit in . He took his own live at the age of 35 in 2019 . 2 weeks before Christmas. I miss him every day

"You think I hate myself but it's you I hate because you have the nerve to make me feel" my god... John's lyrics are incredible.

@stevewebb68

Brassic got me here. Perfect song for the show. This song, along with the video, shows 'reality'...just like Brassic does. Although it's a comedy with supposed exaggerated characters, they're so real to me, as I know them all, or have done. It's about the choice's some of us make regarding how to live our lives, and how to make money. It's all there...pain, love, jealousy, madness and proper belly laughs....and this song encapsulates all that, along with the heart-breaking awkwardness that sometimes goes along with being different.
