The longest cave cartography I've seen done
by explorers was over 400 miles in extent as
measured. To go there you need a big bundle
of printer paper and wait time for the pages

indoor basketball court extent to lay the sheets

I went to this "cave" once with a group of friends in high-school. The Nutty Putty Caves are not really what I'd call a traditional cave, it's more like a complex tunnel system accessible through a big hole in the ground. I'm not claustrophobic but felt super uneasy the entire time I was underground, and was relieved when it was time to climb out. A couple guys explored the birth canal section a bit, which looked absolutely terrifying.
Timpanogos Cave is a beautiful legit cave not far away from this death trap. I guess it's good they shut it down. What an awful way to die.

I think he was not dumb. He decided to compress his body and to go on, because he thought that due to the gravity he could not escape from the hole by doing It backwards. So he decided to continue hoping that at the bottom of the hole he would have found a room in which he could have twisted his body and than escape from It! It's been a desperate attempt that he made to save his life, made right after the awarness of having done a mistake: enter into the hole head- first.

I have been in there several times with scouts as a leader. It was a popular cave to explore, and a great adventure for the young men. We always had a great time. I always made it very clear that no one was to go into that part of the cave, the birth canal. This story is such a sad tragedy, and is heart breaking to even think about for all involved. I new that part of the cave was dangerous, but according to this information seems like an almost certain death trap. I wish they had sealed that part of the cave off from exploration to prevent this from ever happening and the whole cave being shut down.

He was a grown ass man with a SO & a baby at home yet he decided to make the decision to crawl into a tiny space. The full story about this case is even more frustrating. The group barely had any cave exploring experience and decided to go in completely unprepared. They were also being dumb enough to dare each other to crawl into tiny spaces. No one took it seriously until he got stuck beyond help.

He needed previous information to know he was in the right place. Which he didn't. Him and the people he was with never been there before. He went off path into uncharted territory by himself head first. He was going up and down twisting in 45 degree angles before hitting a 60 to 80 degree angle. He was working against gravity with no leverage to reverse himself. Being labeled "beginner-friendly" may have given him a false sense of safety because by all indications he did many things wrong that even a beginner caver would think twice about. Like going through a 10 by 18 inch hole against gravity over a lip of rock. That is nuts. It is obvious he was oblivious to the danger.

@@samuelmorales2344 the birth canal was a well-known part of the cave for being a long narrow tunnel, he assumed that was where he was. when he went to the small passageway, he thought that was where he was and when he saw it dip down it appeared to open up into a larger area. which obviously wasn't the case. he shouldn't have made those assumptions and that split-decision moment cost him his life, as he didn't take the time to think over the choices. i don't think he was oblivious, i also think its odd that a cave would be labeled beginner-friendly yet not really have labeled trials or caution on unknown trials. this wasn't the first time someone got trapped or hurt, just the first time it resulted in death. i will put it out there that im not huge on cave knowledge so i could be completely wrong but it looked like the guy was inexperienced and that was what killed him.

John's mistake was going head first through a narrow passage going against gravity that was getting tighter and tighter. I believe this is a warning and lesson thought to all future cavers.

Growing up in a small town in Germany I used to play in local caves with my friends. When I was ten or so the papers and news shows were full of a story about a man who had killed several children, and stored their bodies in a cave. Needless to say that was the end of me playing in caves.

You assume that after a point he was sure about his death. We know about his certain death. But in reality his last hour is no different than previous ones except maybe passing more often. He was waiting to be saved as before. Even after the failed attempt he was alive and asked about if his resquer is fine. Most likely he was waiting to repeat the procedure, I will dare to say having more morale because what it works once it may work again. He was almost saved at some point.

I happened to be in Utah visiting with family for Thanksgiving when this all happened. I recall the news coverage and rescue attempts and the sadness we all felt when we learned that this father of several kids wouldn’t be rescued. And To make it more tragic they couldn’t even recover the body. One of the worst nightmares a person could experience.

I was living in Utah just 20 minutes from nutty putty cave when this happened. I remember being pissed that people willfully engage in hobbies like this and that a soon to be father and medical school student and BYU grad would engage in such behavior… I’m not pissed anymore just sad. This is like the worst thing I’ve ever heard in my life. I can’t imagine a worse thing happening to anybody or a worse way to go than the fate of John jones. Rip John. Goodness.

Since I was a little child I was afraid to be buried alive. Really in absolute fear, with not be able to sleep;;I have no idea how I came to that idea so young. I was still a toddler and not even in kindergarten.
But I must say, this death is way more horrific than my life long fear.

I've explored a few caves, and as a guy from California, I'm always afraid an earthquake will hit while I'm underground. I know these caves have been around for thousands of years, but still with my luck....I can't believe they were never able to free his body. Poor guy, terrible luck.

I had some problem with my periods, I had irregular periods so..the doctor sent me for some tests, I experienced a horrible situation inside this MRI machine, I was literally dying inside, because it's SO enclosed like you can hardly see anything, and that made me soo nervous and terrified inside, I could hardly breathe! I was so afraid and started shouting remembering all those final destination movie scenes, all these scenarios hit my mind like, what if the machine starts burning up with fire, you know.. this was my story..and I can literally feel this person's situation who was so miserable inside the cave, stucked upside down for hours. I pray for everybody that in their life never they have face such terrifying situation.

I just watched a movie on YouTube about this. I knew they wouldn't be able to save him, but kept hoping throughout the show. I almost didn't watch as the idea of be trapped in a cave really freaks me out. The rescue workers were wonderful. Sorry for all involved.

I remember when the news reported this story as it was happening.. news crews were on it the entire time.. everyone was wondering whether Jon would pull through.. he lived maybe 10 mins up the road from where I was from. It was always positive words that you would here how he's doing well communicating they have a rope pulley system to pull him out, but slowly the story was becoming darker and more grim. I believe they reported that as they started to pull him up he slipped and was wedged even further down and landed on his neck In a way that was damaging. This was part of the words that came out when they reported his death. Super sad story but one way to become immortalized and have a legendary story.

@@bestopinion9257 there were trying to resque him for almost 24 hours I was watching it all live, so yeah he was definitely alive for most of the time, they only sealed in the cave after they realized he had no pulse. So he probably remained a live for a little bit longer after the last failed attempt caused him to be wedged even more crammed in the cave and slowly lost conciousness. Super sad story but the guy goes down as a legend forever engrained in history.

few years ago, i used an elevator in the far backend of the office and the door didnt open...i panicked and almost lost my breath....cant even imagine what he must have gone thru waiting to be rescued for 24 hours...the emotions he must had been thru and the prayers. There are two things i will never do. Caves and bungee jumping....there are better things to keep me happy.

The movie The Last Descent messed me up. I'm still stressed and it's been over an hour. I feel very sad for John and his family. He had so much going for him. Wish he would have chose something different that day.
